Coworking at The Box Jelly

A Kakaako furniture store hosts pop-up creative space

We started talking about Hawaii’s coworking movement in April on the heels of SXSW and in an effort to elevate our creative community and bring awareness to community co-ops with a passion for collaboration and business.

Rechung Fujihira and his team of dynamic business majors were able to pivot from an original idea and launch a space called “The Box Jelly,” dedicated to integrating the social experience with a variety of talents and skill sets.

We caught up with The Box Jelly team to learn more about their business venture and how they plan to revolutionize the modern workspace.

How do you work daily? Are you in an office, or do you currently work in a coworking environment? We want to hear from you!

Leave your comments and tell us how you would improve your current work situation?

If anyone wants to see the interiors of fishcake (where The Box Jelly is) you can have a look at my flickr set of photos I did for Hawaii Luxury Magazine three years ago.

Hey Reychung, Rex here... I didn't know your were doing this... Maura never mentioned it. Hope you are successful with it. Honolulu can use a place like this for us self-employed/home office kind of guys!

Awesome idea. If you guys haven't spoken to Ryan Kanno yet, this might be a good place for Hi-Capacity to meet and coordinate. Also, our company will be renting out our office and will probably need a space to collaborate and meet until our new workspace is built and complete. Is the fee per-person or can there be a group rate setup if 5-6 people are there daily?

I look forward to see the progress. Keep up the great work!

chrisota Hey Chris, Were in contact with ryankanno and the Hi-Cap team. Were looking forward to them coming down to talk story at The Box Jelly later this week. Good idea to connect us, thanks.

Right now we are on individual rates but it you want a group rate we can probably work something out. Come by the space or email me at info at theboxjelly dot com

I can see how co-working would be a cool setup. For productivity, it would force me to work on stuff, so I can have something to show to people. That could be a blog post, a mockup for a web design, or an operational piece of programming code. If you made a goal of doing enough to have one thing to present to others every day, you could get a lot done. Then there's the social aspect. While it's relaxing to type away on your laptop in a coffee shop, you can't just wander around and introduce yourself to people. With co-working, you can check out what cool stuff people are making, and get inspired by trading ideas. It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Best of luck to The Box Jelly.

A "pop-up coworking space." Cool! For the month? Does that mean The Box Jelly pops up somewhere else next month? It looks great at Fishcake, though I guess anything would in a boutique furniture store. Interesting that they're charging right out of the gate, but hey, how better to gauge if the idea is sustainable?

hawaii Hey Ryan, I haven't seen you in a while.

Were working on getting spaces for longer then a month but we will be popping up in different spaces on leases a year or less most likely.

We are looking for new places to pop-up in the coming months. Where would you like to work? What is important for you?

Anyone come come down and try our space for two days free of charge.

Yes fishcake has been a good place for us to pop-up because it is such a beautiful space, we're lucky.

We spent the better part of the past year looking for ways to create spaces for independents to come together and thrive. It's our dream to create places for people who's work and life are intertwined. To build something that is self sustaining and will last.

Take care

I enjoyed seeing how coworking can work. It's interesting how so many mainland trends, from coworking spaces to food truck rallies, are making their way to Hawaii and being introduced by young, entrepreneurial types.

DianeSeo Good point. It's an exciting time in Honolulu. It really feels like we're in the middle of a shift, in a good way. I'm looking forward to seeing and being inspired by other projects in the works. Any other mainland trends that you'd like to see drop in Hawaii?

my work life has been spent in the traditional structured corporate environment. my wife is an architect and has had a work life less structured. architects like creative spaces and casual synergy. for a self employed person, these co-operatives make a nice compromise between going to a cubicle in a highrise and trying to carve out an isolated home workspace. creatives need the company of other creative people. what a peaceful space BoxJelly is. thanks for showing it to us.

turkfontaine Thank you for the kind words, Please come down anytime, it really is a peaceful space.
