Who’s coming: Eat the Street May

This month’s event features 33 food trucks and street food vendors, including 10 newcomers. Here’s what’s on the menu

Posted May 25, 2011 by Diane Seo

Friday’s Eat the Street food truck rally celebrates summer, and features 33 trucks and street food vendors, including 10 newcomers. A few making their debut — including Achilles Grill (Thai food) and Tiki Truck (fusion tacos, sloppy joes, “stanky” corn) — are brand new to the city’s food truck scene, which means it’s going to be a fun, exciting night to try Honolulu’s newest, and most sought-after, trucks.

To coincide with the “celebrate summer” theme, Momsinhawaii.com will host the Kids Summertime Zone, featuring face painting, balloon art, a farm truck, a Yummy Tummy Kids’ Food Truck (exclusive to this event) and Alaka’i Party Rental Bounce. Yet, while more keiki will be roaming the grounds, Eat the Street will continue with its hip vibe, with Lightsleepers live art, live local music provided by Eia Ka Manawa Records and DJ Mr. Nick in the house.

Nonstop Honolulu and Foodspotting.com also have teamed up to hold a first-time scavenger hunt at Eat the Street, with various prizes given out to five winners.

Where: 555 South St. in Kaka’ako (at Halekauwila, kitty-corner from Restaurant Row)
Admission: Free

    @streetgrindz @hawaii I have to admit I was a little worried not having the two top dogs around, but after I read through this ETS’ lineup I thought wow, this could be the best one yet as far as the variety of foods being offered…Thai, Cuban/Caribbean fusion, sushi, dim sum, “stanky” corn, izakaya style grilled stuff on a stick, waffle dogs, chocolate etc. etc. Can’t wait to try as much as I can, hope the first timers can handle the crowd!

    @nonstopmari haha it’s official. :) And we’re using square payments from a tent all the way out here in Honolulu, Hawaii!

  10. Posted May 26, 2011 at 6:25 am

    @streetgrindz @hawaii I’m guessing that means they aren’t even around town, either, huh? I was really looking forward to trying Gogi when I was in Hawai’i too…

  11. Posted May 26, 2011 at 6:26 am

    @streetgrindz Yeah… I kept hoping that when Eat the Street for May came around that it would coincide with my travel dates. Hopefully Eat the Street will be going strong a year from now when we make our next trip to the islands. Then maybe I can plan around it. :)

  12. Posted May 26, 2011 at 6:27 am

    @johngarcia I swear I miss all the good stuff. :)

    @WERUreo @streetgrindz @hawaii The Gogi Truck is in limbo, all I know is that the original owner sold it to someone else and turned it over to them after Eat The Street III for Japan. It then ran for a short while with the new owners, then all of a sudden everything just stopped. :-( Hope Gogi returns one day.

    @nonstopmari @WERUreo @streetgrindz @hawaii and the Gogi Dog 2.0…and the Bi Bim Burrito/Changa…and…*sigh*

  18. Posted May 26, 2011 at 10:13 am

    @808marv @streetgrindz @hawaii Aw, that’s sad. After watching The Great Food Truck Race on Food Network a few months ago, I got really interested in food trucks. Gogi was the first one I had heard about in Hawai’i, and I was really looking forward to trying it. I guess the food truck scene in Hawai’i has really blown up though, so really I can still get a good food truck experience when I get there.
