Oscar Nominations – Snubs and Surprises

A look at who the Academy let in and left out

The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday, and as usual, there were several surprises and snubs, even more so than normal. “Lincoln” led the way with 12 nominations and not surprisingly, as it’s the type of feel good important film with a strong pedigree the Academy loves to reward. “Life of Pi” also garnered 11 nominations, while “Silver Linings Playbook” picked up eight nods. Early front runners, “Argo,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Les Miserables,” however seem to have lost some steam with some snubs in significant categories.

Here’s a look at the surprises and snubs in the major categories.

Best Actor (2 of 8)

Best Actor

Bradley Cooper - "Silver Linings Playbook"

Daniel Day-Lewis - "Lincoln"

Hugh Jackman - "Les Miserables"

Joaquin Phoenix - "The Master"

Denzel Washington - "Flight

Phoenix is the surprise nominee here as reviews of his film "The Master" were divided at best and he has openly expressed his disdain for awards. The nomination would have been more appreciated had it gone to Richard Gere for his performance in "Arbitrage."

About Myong Choi

Born in Korea but a Hawaii resident since the age of 1, Myong Choi is a diligent engineer by day and an enthusiastic fun seeker by night. His appreciation for film started with watching bloody and violent Shaw Brothers kung fu films at Empress Theatre at age 5. When not catching up on the latest or greatest films he’s following K-pop trends, outside hiking or playing basketball, or inside enjoying an ice cold beer with friends.
