Oscar Nominations – Snubs and Surprises

A look at who the Academy let in and left out

Posted January 11, 2013 by Myong Choi

The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday, and as usual, there were several surprises and snubs, even more so than normal. “Lincoln” led the way with 12 nominations and not surprisingly, as it’s the type of feel good important film with a strong pedigree the Academy loves to reward. “Life of Pi” also garnered 11 nominations, while “Silver Linings Playbook” picked up eight nods. Early front runners, “Argo,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Les Miserables,” however seem to have lost some steam with some snubs in significant categories.

Here’s a look at the surprises and snubs in the major categories.

Best Picture (1 of 8)

Best Picture

"Amour"

"Argo"

"Beasts of the Southern Wild"

"Django Unchained"

"Les Miserables"

"Life of Pi"

"Lincoln"

"Silver Linings Playbook"

"Zero Dark Thirty"

Ever since the Academy decided to expand the Best Picture beyond just 5 nominations a few years ago, it's been less common for there to be a major snub in the category. Would I have liked to see nominations for "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "Skyfall?" Sure, but I knew it was highly unlikely. However, critic favorites "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" are two surprise nominations. One is a French film about an elderly couple and the other a tale of an amazing young girl. Do they have a legitimate shot at the prize or are their nominations their reward?
