Six months after opening its brewery and beer hall on Nimitz, Aloha Beer released its first retail bottled beer. What better occasion to celebrate the bottled Aloha Lager than the night the world was supposed to end? Take that, Mayan calendar!
Outside, rush-hour traffic and drizzly-cold weather. Inside, endless bottles of Aloha Lager, Aloha Beer’s full line of eight brews on tap, and a buffet line with seared poke, kalua pig quesadillas, kimchee fried rice, a build-your-own nacho bar and other standards from the kitchen shared with Sam Choy’s Breakfast Lunch & Crab next door. Live music was by Amanda Frazier and The Boys and house band Analog, whose range of covers went from Johnny Cash to Journey.
As for the Aloha Lager? Despite the rising popularity of craft brews, “green bottle beers” remain most favored by local palates, and Aloha Lager capitalizes on that light-bodied, familiar flavor. I’m a fan of amber ales, so I was excited to hear that the Aloha Red is likely next in line to be bottled.
Since the world hasn’t ended after all, Aloha Beer is open seven days a week til 10 or 11 p.m., with happy hour daily from 4 to 6:30. Aloha Lager is also available at stores including Costco, 7-Eleven, Whole Foods, Safeway, Marukai and Don Quijote.
