The weather was nice yesterday, so there were more nudists out than I can remember in recent years. (Don’t forget, in San Francisco, you can be naked, but you can’t be drunk.) Also, there were a lot more people smoking weed on the course than I can remember. (Don’t forget, in California, you can get marijuana for “medicinal purposes.”)

Bay to Breakers 2012 (1 of 54)

Well, on Sunday, May 20, at 7 a.m. Pacific time (4 a.m. Hawaii time), @Tadasauce will return to Bay to Breakers — with a whole new costume, a new game plan, and more of our friends to join in the wackiness.

But don’t be looking too much on Facebook — as you can see, my photos can get pretty wild, and I got flagged eight times two years ago! Cheehoo! An excuse to head out leeward, for the island’s other big wine and food fest. This is not the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, the mammoth event that started last year and this September will bring nearly 60 top chefs from Hawaii, the United States and the world to Waikiki.

No. Happening this weekend at Ko Olina is what organizer Keola Lloyd describes as a destination event showcasing local culinary, fashion and musical talent in a drop-dead gorgeous oceanfront setting far, far away from the stresses of town. Who wouldn’t go?

2012 Hawaii Wine and Food (1 of 34)

I got here ahead of the rest of the group, so I toodled around the Ferry Building Marketplace. Do you know that I’ve never eaten at Hog Island Oyster Co.? It’s usually really crowded because it’s so popular, but if you go on an off hour — as I just did — you can get in with no problem.

After lunch, I just shopped at Union Square to work up an appetite for dinner at Frances. This was a dinner I had anticipated for a long time, since reservations are hard to come by.

San Francisco eats: Frances (1 of 19)

I'd been trying to get in to Frances for a while now, but getting a reservation is almost impossible. I was told that you can't reserve a table more than three months in advance, so I set my alarm to contact them on March 17.

The Standard 'M' Rebranding Party w/Diplo (1 of 69)

You broke out onto the scene with your smash single, “After Tonight.” Was that song written about anyone in particular?

To be honest, no not really. It was just a catchy melody and a song that came to me.

How big of a role did VH1 play in you becoming more mainstream? What’s your relationship like with them now?

Pretty good, actually. I’ve done promotional things with them when both albums came out. Very grateful to have them by my side.

A lot of people don’t know this, but you come from an entertainment industry family. Your brothers sing, and your half-aunty is actress Kyra Sedgwick. Did you feel pressured into being a part of the entertainment industry, or did it come naturally?

There was no pressure at all. We definitely don’t consider it to be “show business,” because we are all doing something we are truly passionate about. I want to pursue music because I love it. If I can make people happy and live comfortably making music, then that’s my goal.

You have a very casual and simplistic wardrobe when you perform. Is that a reflection of your personality?

I would guess so. I feel like I’m coming into myself more. Most people like to feel comfortable on stage when they are performing, including myself.

Who are your musical inspirations?

D’Angelo, Fugees, Lauren Hill, Raphael Saadiq, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, to name a few.

Who are you listening to on your iPod right now?

I really really like Sigur Ros and James Blake right now.

What’s your favorite part about playing concerts in Hawaii?

I like that Hawaii is so removed from the other states in a way, yet in many ways its still connected. I’m looking forward to going out to the North Shore. The people are definitely nicer here as well.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

Well, I’m working on my next album. I like taking my sessions on the road with me. That’s really my main focus right now. I took a bunch of time off from my first album. I feel really fresh and rejuvenated, especially when I’m able to pursue the type of music that I want to pursue.
