Your guide to Night Market: Green

Saturday’s street party’s not all about Earth Day, shopping and music. We’re eating green, too

It’s Earth Day and it’s green — a dual symphonic theme of sorts for this week’s Honolulu Night + Market, starring living architecture, music with a reggae touch and, uh, green food.

We’ll get back to that food. You know by now there’ll be street performers threading through the crowds, a hot fashion show on the outdoor catwalk and an all-new lineup of popup retail booths at the Pinch of Salt warehouse. Walk in and you’ll be traversing a 3D archipelago made from more than 80 pieces of recycled MDF boards equipped with grass. Add an exhibit of ambitious unbuilt urban projects by architects from around the world and a Sean Connelly structure of 32,000 pounds of volcanic soil and coral sand at nearby studios, and you’ve got plenty of food for thought.

Some of which will be green. Literally. Like green crepes, green grilled cheese sandwiches, green salsas and green gelato (it’s pistachio) from a record 16 trucks and booths. And do not forget those Art Cards, sold at different vendors and various points around Night + Market, to be collected (each is a limited edition available for three months) or redeemed for Artivities and discounts.

ALOHA POPS: Ichigo daifuku (strawberry mochi), green tea, pineapple li hing, chocolate peanut butter, passion orange guava, green river, blue vanilla handmade frozen pops

BAJA STYLE: Four green salsas — tomatillo, salsa verde, aguacate and esmerelda with poblano chiles — to go with burrititos, el rollo de queso, taquitos and green chorizo and other tacos

BLUE TRUCK TEPPANYAKI: Bacon wrap, chicken wrap and rib eye steak roll, all grilled on a teppan grill like at Benihana's

CAKE WORKS: Eight beloved flavors of French macarons plus a martini bar with apple, chocolate, lemon drop and Manhattan macarons filled with liquor jelly

ELENA'S: Pork adobo fried rice omelet, pansit, lumpia, pork/chicken adobo, guisantes, lechon

PIG & THE LADY: Honolulu's Vietnamese street food phenom pops up with a menu of soulful noodle bowls and crispy, crazy banh mi sandwiches

IL GELATO: Pistachio, gianduia, chocolate, sea salted caramel gelato; raspberry, mango sorbetto, affogato, root beer float

ISLAND POPPER: Gourmet sweet and savory popcorn in caramel, furikake, cheese and butter flavors, all of which you can mix

KOI CATERING: Grilled mahi mahi with pesto linguine, panko-crusted garlic ahi with sweet wasabi aioli, grilled pork chops with mushroom gravy

MISO & ALE: Good Ol’ Fried Chicken with kim chee sticky rice, Spam or fried chicken with spicy scrambled eggs in a French pancake, tater tot mushroom poutine, Crack Jacks, brownies

MOMO BURGER: Green tomato gazpacho with arugula-toasted mac nut pesto grilled cheese sandwiches, bacon burgers, teri burgers

OKONOMI GRINDS: Savory Japanese pancakes layered with meats, kimchee, cabbage, grilled to order and drizzled with sauces; perhaps stir-fried yakisoba noodles

PETIT SUISSE CREPES: The Dream - Nutella, strawberry, bananas; Caprese - mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil oil; Greek - spinach, feta, sun-dried tomato pesto, all in green-batter crepes

SIMPLY ONO: Lox and bagels - smoked salmon belly with cream cheese, capers and onions; bbq pulled pork sliders, spicy poke on rice, triple chocolate mousse, Samurai honeydew melon guriguri

WHATCHAFILLIN: Waffles stuffed with steak and homemade pesto, mint custard with chocolate chips, and ham, gruyere, caramelized onions, mayo

XTREME TACOS: Fried chicken, beef burritos and oh those nachos, all from a screaming yellow truck named Ignacio


 

THE ENTERTAINMENT


Roothub

RootHub’s style has been dubbed “Life Music”. His voice, deep, gravelly and smoky, is familiar and yet different from anything you’ve likely heard. There is a sensitivity, a positivity and an honesty. One part Kerouac, two parts Dylan, one part Tom Waits, a dash of salt water and you’ve got Root Hub, a modern enigma.


MOJO

Music Over Judgement And Oppression, aka M.O.J.O, is a reggae band that combines ska, rock, dub and hip hop. Formed in the Washington, D.C. area, M.O.J.O has performed at The Roxy, Whisky a go go and House of Blues and opened for SOJA, Passafire and Ballyhoo. They won the open mic category at the December 2012 Mai Tai Rumble.


Swimwear fashion show — 9 p.m. onstage

Swimwear’s back! Summer Shiigi’s Summer Style Hawaii outfits models strutting the latest in hot and local, with hair done by Paul Brown Hawaii at Ward and makeup by Risa Hoshino. Styling the stage will be Paiko Hawaii, the new plant and living-art shop just around the corner at 675 Auahi St.

CoXist Lounge, next to Whole Ox Deli on Keawe Street, 6 to 11 p.m. — Architectural exhibition of ambitious, unbuilt projects by young architects from across the globe: Dimitri Damiel Kim from Honolulu, Angel Garcia from Barcelona, Chao Wei-Su from Shanghai, Owen Nichols from NYC, Matt Hung from London, and Herman Lee from Hong Kong. The goal is to reintroduce the concepts of bold, vanguard and utopian styles in contemporary architecture, and get people talking about the future of what can be built.

Pinch of Salt — Dimitri Kim of XMANIFOLD A.D.R.L. (Applied Design Research Laboratory), together with Oahu Makerspace, will head up an architectural installation. Commemorating Earth Day, “Pae moku, pae ʻāina,” or “The Archipelago” is built from over 80 unique pieces of laser-cut recycled MDF boards, each equipped with grass. Together, these pieces form a walkable boardwalk.

ii Gallery, 687 Auahi St. — Honolulu-based designer and architect Sean Connelly’s installation, “A Small Area of Land (Kaka‘ako Earth Room),” is a temporary earth sculpture with 32,000 pounds of volcanic soil and coral sand coaxed into a freestanding structure. Presented by Interisland Terminal and made of two of Hawaii’s most politically charged materials (dirt and sand), it’s intended to inspire dialogue on Hawaii’s environmental decline, and how we can help create a healthy and self-sustainable future.
