First look: New Safeway Beretania

Two dozen poke, tons of tortillas and a childhood snack that’s back for $3.69

Eight a.m. Saturday morning? Brave the surging multitudes of grand-opening shoppers with their hundreds of cars, hundreds of shopping carts and thousands of fingers reaching for free samples?! No way!

We choose the route of the sane: We pay a first visit to the new Beretania Safeway 12 hours later, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Here’s what we find.

New Safeway Beretania (2 of 32)

New Safeway Beretania

Three ways up from parking to store: via elevator, escalators for people and carts, and stairs.

Also like: Three ways in, from Beretania, Piikoi and Kinau streets.

I know that we're always looking for "more" nowadays...more options, more convenience, more sophistication..but it comes at such a high cost (figuratively speaking) when it puts so many smaller/local stores out of business!! It's sad to see scores of Hawaii-people relegated to the role of "worker-bee drones," just an anonymous speck among thousands of employees getting paid minimum wage by some big-box mainland chain that really doesn't care about them individually whatsoever. Local families work two or three jobs just to survive, but then turn around & send millions of dollars of our of hard-earned money to mainland corporations, to support corporate big-wigs on the mainland, while we continue to cry & complain "why isn't there enough money to go around in Hawaii??" Anyway, I guess my point is that we should all try to shop at locally-owned stores, rather than the Safeways & Wal-Marts & Targets & Costcos that keep invading our island home...or at least think about the ramifications of our day-to-day choices. Giant conglomerations like these have more than enough business on the mainland to keep them fat & wealthy, but the little local stores here in Hawaii really just have US. If we're going to spend money one way or another, it might as well be from local businesses that truly have heart & roots here in Hawaii.

prish808 thnku for bringing up an excellent point. in the last few years, we've seen times change to mainland ownership and acquire star markets. as far as i know, the only local supermarket chain left on oahu is foodland, which labels its local produce as a selling point in some stores.

we're also seeing growing crowds shopping at farmers' markets, and that includes those shopping for produce and not just pizza, plate lunches and other prepared foods.

we also see the mega-chain whole foods sourcing 25% of produce at its oahu store locally (its own claim).

i know this is overly simplistic, but it's a mixed bag of trends, not all of them negative.

So Cool. Hilo has a new Safeway too. And yes, it was crazy on opening day. Still busy.

I live right up the street from the new Safeway and usually (except for during rush hour) take Piikoi to get home... I've noticed a slight increase in traffic, but so far not much more than usual. Pretty impressed by the deli section at the new Safeway, actually.

theimpulsivebuy i know, right? what times has that safeway doesn't:

nice ribeye steak and chicken grilled in the parking lot

kamiya and song papayas

asian veggies (ong choi, mizuna etc)

bento, mochi etc

Looks very similar to the Kapahulu store, and a lot better than the old Safeway on Beretania. But wondering what this will do to traffic overall on Piikoi.

DianeSeo remember when kapahulu safeway opened? traffic/parking were a nightmare for weeks. beretania/piikoi can be slow during normal times, and this isn't helping, but i think eventually things will normalize.
