Eat the Street: Dia de Los Muertos

Friday’s Eat the Street attracted lots of face-painted revelers, who came to Kaka‘ako to taste all kinds of special Mexican dishes and celebrate Dia de Los Muertos

Friday’s Eat the Street brought to Kakaako lots of face-painted revelers hungry for the riot of special Mexican dishes from three dozen food trucks and booths, all in celebration of Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Along with the costumes and face art, a best-tasting taco contest drew 10 entrants. Aloha Pops took top honors and the $100 prize for its Blondie Shaka taco of chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a waffle “taco” shell, the whole thing dipped in chocolate and drizzled with candy sprinkles. Baja Style Mexican Food and Five-0 Ribs tied for second place, Baja offering up a delicious fish taco and Five-0 Ribs wowing judges with its char siu and chipotle taco in a shell of woven bacon strips that took three hours in the smoker.
