Vegas eats: Michael Mina at the Bellagio

Ed Morita and Melissa Chang sample the food of Michael Mina in Las Vegas

For my first night in Las Vegas, I figured I’d kill two birds with one stone by having dinner at the Bellagio. That way, I’d have a great meal at an award-winning restaurant, and also have a great view of the hotel’s water show. The Bellagio has several great restaurants, including Le Cirque, Todd English’s Olives and Picasso. After a few text messages, Melissa Chang and I decided to give Michael Mina a try.

Michael Mina has five Vegas restaurants (American Fish at the Aria, Nobhill Tavern, Seablue at the MGM Grand and Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay). His self-titled eatery at the Bellagio melds Japanese, French and seasonal flavors.

People tend to overuse the expression, "melts in your mouth." I'll admit to being guilty of this, but never have I ever had a brownie that did, in fact, melt in your mouth… until now. If it weren't for the tuile garnish, I wouldn't even have had to chew. Once on my tongue, it evaporated, leaving bitter sweetness as the only evidence that it was ever there.

Here is a bonus video of the Bellagio’s water show.

Michael Mina was the first place I had foie gras and YES, it has spoiled me for all others. We did a tasting menu there a couple of years ago and besides the great food, our experience was even better because of the service. They seemed to know exactly when we wanted to chat and ask questions and when we wanted to be left alone to savor!
