Home Bar & Grill (1 of 18)

Home Bar & Grill

They're back — the guys who brought you Kanpai on Ward have moved on and have opened a new hangout. Chris Tai, left, and John Estrella, along with kitchen crew Brandon Hamada and Neil Nakasone, opened Home Bar & Grill last week to a door-busting crowd. Already loyal customers are coming in for darts, karaoke, and the menu items that originally made their Ward restaurant so popular. Open from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily, the guys also have valet parking in the back so you don't have to fight for the few spots out front.

Home Bar & Grill
1683 Kalakaua Ave.

I’m with you Melissa, I’m not a big fan of pork chops at bars in Hawaii. Must definitely be man food because my husband has to order them every time we go to Sidestreet.

    Posted January 10, 2011 at 10:15 pm

@Nanigurl Thank you!! Now I don’t feel so bad. I always feel like an outsider when people really really want to get pork chops! You & I can eat the negitoro in the corner, then.

@ParkRat Actually, you’re the perfect demographic for it: Local guy, no frills. You would probably like a lot of the stuff! Bar food!

Yay! I love Kanpai! Only thing is that it’s become so crowded lately. Just last week we went down for some beer and pupu’s and weren’t able to find a table so we headed over to Kochi…very disapointed with Kochi. Now that there’s a suedo “Kanpai 2″, a.k.a. Home Bar and Grill, we have a new place to enjoy our beer, food , and atmosphere. The only thing about these kind of places is that after a while they become so popular they start becoming ghetto..ala Mai Tai Bar…

Mmm tater tots. Maybe they can do it Gogi Truck style and throw some pieces of kalbi on there, or kalua pig/carnitas. Hey if they’re gonna make it like nachos why not right? ;-) Everything looks good though.

digital darts? where have i been for the last century?

in my drinking and darting days we used steel, bought our own and constantly compared, customized and tuned them like a sweet, sticky rice rocket of a dream drifter some Japanese laptop bombadier might own. and we put the genuine English straw target on the door of the women’s room. it made the birds real nervous.

    but i grow old.

note to self: roll trouser bottoms

@MoOgooGuypAN huh! For real? Why is that? I haven’t been to Mai Tai Bar in forever…..

    Posted January 11, 2011 at 3:48 am

@808marv Funny! @jlieu actually had an idea for varying toppings for the taters. She’s the carb queen, so the tater ideas were flowing!

@nonstopmari I had 7 regular strength on Saturday thankyouverymuch

  22. Melissa808
    Posted January 11, 2011 at 3:58 am

@turkfontaine man, where HAVE you been? Digital darts has been the standard for a while….more accurate for scoring. Although as someone who has no upper body strength, I can tell you that if the dart doesn’t hit the board hard enough, the points won’t register. :P

  23. Posted January 11, 2011 at 4:06 am

@turkfontaine I haven’t seen digital darts before either, and people are constantly kicking me off their lawn. This is crazy talk. I probably wouldn’t be able to make the darts hit the board hard enough at times, though. Darn you, upper body strength (or lack thereof).

  24. Posted January 11, 2011 at 4:28 am

@Melissa808 @808marv @jlieu Hahaha! At first glance I thought you said Jenn was the CRAB queen!

All I could think of was “Ewwww!”

  25. Posted January 11, 2011 at 4:29 am

This is seriously the best value for the most fun you can have in Honolulu. The service is excellent and the food is even better. I highly recommend the kim chi fried rice and the green apple mixed drink. Only one complaint–parking is a pain and the exterior may be deceiving. But, once you’ve found your spot, and walk into the doors, this is like the local watering hole that won’t rip you off like so many other places in the new Honolulu.

@RodBugarin thanks for stopping by the site! I agree, some girlfriends have said they’ve passed the place on the outside and it looked scary to them. It’s surprising to see how far back the room goes once you’re inside.

@harrycovair Kanpai is still around, just not with these guys! I wonder what the clientele at Kanpai is now? This place seems busy every night.

  52. Posted January 15, 2011 at 9:45 pm
