Where can I take visitors from out of town? (1 of 35)

Where can I take visitors from out of town?

Since I eat out a lot, people always ask me where to take their friends or family who visit Hawaii. It's a hard question. One one hand, you want visitors to try food that's unique to Hawaii. But sometimes, there are picky eaters in the group or they have small children, or you have to consider budget.

I usually have visitors from all over the Mainland. I also have family that grew up here, but live in places where Asian food is scarce, and Hawaiian food is nonexistent. So here's my short answer to where to take out-of-town guests.

Melissa - Chai's Island Bistro is a great place to enjoy Hawaiian music too...if they still do that.

For older out town guests from Asia I would take them for good steaks at BLT Trump Waikiki . Service is very upscale VIP.

Melissa808 204 pts

kelike oh, yes....steak for Asians, yah?

ParkRat 20 pts

I don't think I've ever been to Shimazu. Where do you park if you do go there anyways?

Melissa808 204 pts

ParkRat I usually find parking right along School St. If I'm REALLY desperate, I'll park at Foodland and wander in, then wander out toward Shimazu.

It depend on the age of guest and of course background where they came from living on mainland or country. My guests would be from Asia in films and show business background. I do like local eateries but since guests would perfer more Waikiki spots. Top of Waikiki and Oceanurim , Pagoda and Wilow sound pretty good for them. Good steakhouse restaurant like Black Angus is must have.

Melissa808 204 pts

vick12 That's true, Asian travelers like American steak....

(wonder if this will post?)

This is a very hard list to just mention 10 places. With the myriad of choices, flavors, nationalities, styles of cooking... it'll all come down to personal choices.

I too tend to stay away from Waikiki but because the visitors like to stay there I'll recommend some of your choices Melissa. I'll also send them to Roy's, Ciao Mein (if they're still in the Hyatt), and Hy's Steak House. At least now I can take them to Kaimuki Grill (that Fried Rice pic does look good) instead of Chinatown. As for breakfast, sometimes we'll go to Original House of Pancakes on Kapiolani or Pancake House by Waiakamilo Road.
The ex-locals visiting always head for the usual places to find their favorite grindz.

Melissa808 204 pts

harrycovair It's rough for my Nebraska cousins as they only return to Hawaii once every several years. They want to eat all the local food!

Since San Francisco Embacadero Hyatt shut down their revolving restaurant there no special restaurant like that in San Francisco. Top of Waikiki it great for them to enjoyed. I like do like Oeanurium and Pagoda very much. Willow sound so peaceful setting they would like.

Melissa808 204 pts

kelike ah yes the view from Top of Waikiki....

chant808 51 pts

Good list, even though I'm sure there's tons of places you left out! I agree with Little Village, RumFire and Shokudo... taken quite a few of my out-of-town friends there! Hmmm, now I should do the same list for bars and clubs, shouldn't I?

Melissa808 204 pts

chant808 I angsted as I whittled the list to 10. 10! how do you do that?? More like 30.
Yes please!! Bars & clubs!

Wine Gurl: Plenty fuud porn on this post! Say, the plethora of Flied Lice reminds me that CAT is due to have her annual Fried Rice contest...you will need to get on her case and be a judge! Did the Chinoise invent fried rice? or was it the Italians?

Melissa808 204 pts

Annoddah_Dave Gotta be chinese americans?

Hello Melissa!
great list!
Been to more than half of those places.

808marv 105 pts

Oh shoyu hot dog...slightly burnt too, just how I like it. Just gimme that and some white rice and I'm set. :-) I must stop by Kaimuki Grill one of these days!

Melissa808 204 pts

808marv Mmmmmyeah! I like the added onion flavor!

DianeSeo 91 pts

Great list Melissa. I like your choices. For me, I would take guests to Kai Market and take advantage of the kamaaina deal. They get good food, a big selection, entertainment and a great view. They also validate parking, which is nice.

Melissa808 204 pts

DianeSeo Thanks! Mmmm Kai Market! Another good choice. Too many!

nathankam 37 pts

Good list Melissa. I'm adding Irifune, Tadashi, Town, Okata Bento, Highway Inn, Sugoi, Roy's, Pineapple Room, Ige's, Shige's, Tanioka's, and Kuru Kuru Sushi to this list. ;-)

nonstopmari 189 pts

nathankam nathan, i think u just made ur own Top 11 :>

nathankam 37 pts

nonstopmari ;-) That's what I love about living here...so many good places to eat.

Melissa808 204 pts

nathankam nonstopmari Too many good places! To narrow it to just 10 is super hard. Sssshhhhhh I wonder if my Uncle Ron is reading the comments, too?

ParkRat 20 pts

nathankam I LOVE Okata Bento!!

monkachang 5 pts

Great picks! And oh man, did not know about the taro duck at Little Village. Heading back soon!

Melissa808 204 pts

monkachang Auntie M will take you to Little Village next time! And we will eat at City Cafe.

WERUreo 26 pts

Wow, all those places look 'ono! Next time I'm back in the islands, I gotta try that kalua pig quesadilla!

MoOgooGuypAN 20 pts

Yikes! Waikiki places? I try to think more "No Reservation" style and take friends to less touristy spots or at least away from Waikiki as much as possible. The only exception being adjacent Rainbows drive in. I find another friendly hole in the wall place for more sushi is Tokkuri-tei. Then I would surprise them with lunch at Aiea Bowl and maybe some real saimin from Shige's in Wahiawa. I guess it all depends on what your guests are looking for...

Melissa808 204 pts

MoOgooGuypAN Yah, a lot of times my friends want something close to their hotel so they can walk. But as you say, depends what they are looking for. That's why my family gets to go to holes in the wall!

Ynaku 78 pts

Nice selection. I've been to several but have a hard time doing Waikiki due to parking, but next time we visit in-laws timeshare we can do the walk.

Melissa808 204 pts

Ynaku yup, das how! Walk off the meal afterwards!

kaimana 6 pts

Most awesome! Excellent food choices, Melissa, I'm so hungry now :)

nonstopmari 189 pts

excellent gallery, feels like a great resource! as i said, everybody's list will be different, but urs has lots of picks that will accommodate a range of tastes and budgets w/o repeating what can be widely found on the mainland. nice!

Melissa808 204 pts

nonstopmari Thanks! I'm thinking my next such gallery will be "Uncle Ron's whirlwind tour of Oahu." I know that will include the seared ahi from 3660.

MikeSumida 29 pts

How could you possibly narrow this list down to just 10 choices?!
For my friends who grew up here, but now live on the mainland, it's either Ono's, Rainbow's, Coco Ichiban, or Zippy's.
My parents like to take their out-of-towners to Tanaka of Tokyo (though the novelty isn't quite there anymore), Hiroshi, Ninnikuya or the Prince Court restaurant at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Melissa808 204 pts

MikeSumida I tell you!! It wasn't easy. It's an ever-morphing list. in fact, last night I was angsting at nctrnlbst & nonstopmari because I wanted to swap some out on my list. It's always hard to commit to 10.

MikeSumida 29 pts

Melissa808 That begs the question... what would you have changed?

Melissa808 204 pts

MikeSumida All the ones listed in the last picture with jeannemariepics . I was waffling a lot on listing Pineapple Room instead of Chai's, but Chai's won because they have live music.

russkar 18 pts

Great Suggestions. I also like Azure & Mitch's Sushi for a more upscale experience.

Melissa808 204 pts

russkar if there's budget! yes

Melissa_Kim 20 pts

Oooh fantastic suggestions for my soon-to-be-here-OOTers. I'm surprised there's no garlic shrimp trucks on the list though!

Melissa808 204 pts

Melissa_Kim LOL You mean I gotta DRIVE?! hahaha nah, shrimp trucks are listed at the end of the gallery (last photo). But if it's me, I give them instructions on where to find the shrimp truck and then wave goodbye. ha ha

Melissa_Kim 20 pts

Melissa808 LOL Melissa the drive is the best part! Well it's the best part if you live on the windward side, just taking Kamehameha all way the way and having the ocean right beside you while you drive up.
