M&M eats: Monkeypod Kitchen

Nonstop’s intrepid eating duo is back, this time for a look at a buzz-worthy Ko Olina spot

Happy new year, people! Nonstop’s M&M opens the year with a girls’ night out far from our usual townie haunts, trekking out to Leeward Oahu for a look at Peter Merriman’s new outpost at Ko Olina.

The place was buzzing on a recent Friday, weeks after its late December soft opening and just before the Feb. 1 grand opening. True to Merriman’s formula at his six other restaurants and partnerships, the locale is geared toward visitors as well as locals. Think tiki torches, lava rock columns and a beautiful monkeypod staircase, all within a stone’s throw from the Ihilani resort.

But the food! Worth the drive? Worth the buzz? Sit back and find out.

Mari, like the drinks they serve there.  Heard of SushiSan 1411 Kapiolani Blvd.  Since I living in San Francisco but heading later to Hawaii.  1.00 sushis sound like good deal there.

bettydalycity I think the quality has gone downhill but if you want cheap, that's pretty good!

Now I want a gluten-free Merriman's samin... :(

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

 EurekaGal Is it gluten free?

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

nonstopmari  Melissa808 Yeah...so sad, yeah? It's just not the same with rice noodles.

EurekaGal 22 pts

Melissa808  I wish, I wish. I think wheat flour gluten is what makes saimin noodles so nice and chewy. :(

Melissa, planing to visit Maui and cousins who own a grocery store in Wailuku.  Not sure there good Chinese restaurants there.  Guess Honolulu.  CNY soon any big feast?

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

bettydalycity will you come through Honolulu? I believe there is ONE Chinese restaurant on Maui, it's across the Old Lahaina Luau. We always talk about this and wonder why no one has thought to open one on Maui. Weird, huh?

Fun! Good thing we live on the westside... going to give Happy Hour a try soon. Kid friendly?

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

cai_mommy kind of! They didn't have a kids' menu (that I could see) but my recommendation is to take yours upstairs. More quiet and removed from other adults!

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

Melissa808  cai_mommy it has kind of a gordon biersch vibe, tho i did see one family w/ a toddler and a stroller

Too funny. Bet I'd like the Ocean Breeze. Ted will say that's not saimin, but I'd probably like it better than his favorite. Maybe we could share...

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

Soos808 idk if ocean breeze is strong enough for u, but it was so citrusy-good i had 2! we also tried kula cougar (not that cougarrific), hoopono potion, something elixir and whatever else melissa ordered

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

Soos808 haha now that I think about it, it's kind of not a purist saimin.

MyongChoi 80 pts

So exactly how drunk was Mari? LOL

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

MyongChoi I wish you could see the outtakes so you'd know!! hahahaha I believe she'd had 2 or 3 drinks to my one, which I nursed. Because, you know, I do everything in moderation. Bwahahahahaha

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

Melissa808  MyongChoi diane and i got there an hour before melissa, during which time we acquainted ourselves w/ the cocktail menu. did i say i recommend the ocean breeze?

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

nonstopmari  you cut out the part of the video where you repeated "Ocean Breeze" many times. LOL.  MyongChoi

MyongChoi 80 pts

Melissa808  nonstopmari I think that answers the question of who Nonstop's strongest drinker is. If Mari is getting tipsy from 2 glasses of a drink with a frou-frou name like Ocean Breeze, I have my doubts she can hold her own. ^_^ LOL

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

MyongChoi u weigh twice as much as i do. there was a question of strongest drinker??

MyongChoi 80 pts

nonstopmari See, you were so buzzed that you don't even remember the conversation! LOL I'm willing to go by % volume if weight is an issue. Let's all go out drinking! Hahaha....

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

MyongChoi stop w/ all the % volume engineering talk, i nearly flunked calculus. i don't do drinking contests!! i merely enjoy. but yes, let's all enjoy!

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

nonstopmari  MyongChoi you always use "flunk calculus" as if that's the measure of being a dummy. Hellerrrrrrr I flunked Algebra 3!

EO & Delicate Blossom:  What a gas!  So after a "long ass drive" (LOL..yeah my ass would be too) and lot of cocktails, just to  see EO eating and enjoying "Saimin" is quite a treat.  Especially, since we know her disdain for saimin as a fuud!  I busted a gut when she said "Saimin, Saimin, Saimin..." .  How many cocktails did she have?  Been to Merriman's and the background noise is very familiar, like eating in a train station or Roy's.  Thanks, for the fun post, but, I pass on this place even if I like "Saimin".  Who in their right mind eats saimin with broccoli?

Melissa808 269 pts moderator

Annoddah_Dave Well, there's more to it than the saimin. I felt the food was special, not like some (similar) places even in town! And they use as much local products as possible, which we really liked.  As for the broccoli......a lot got cut out of the commentary, but I thought it was interesting that the broth & noodles were on the salty side, whereas the vegetables were sweet. It was an interesting contrast.

Melissa808 Delicate Blossom:  OK...I going wait for the "out takes" version of the post!!

nonstopmari 246 pts moderator

Annoddah_Dave i liked the broccoli! and the roasted peanuts. it was a fun saimin, and i never thot i'd put those two words together
