Eat the Street @ Party of the Year

Happy 2013, people! Here’s how Kakaako rang in the new year, street-style

Posted December 31, 2012 by Mari Taketa

Happy 2013, people! Kakaako rang in the new year as only Kakaako can, with 30 food trucks and street food booths anchoring the Party of the Year at Kakaako Park, plus fireworks every hour on the hour, a ferris wheel, fire dancers, live music, designated family and 21-plus areas and a big blowout fireworks show at midnight.

Were you there? It seemed half of Honolulu was. Here’s the first part, the last Eat the Street of 2012, with six newcomers among the mix. Think acai shakes, fresh-fried donuts with chocolate sauce, squid luau plates, petits fours and okonomiyaki. All under the Kakaako moon.

Next Eat the Street is Friday, Jan. 25, back on the regular lot at Halekauwila and South streets. Theme: Pro Bowl, with every truck cooking up a specialty from an NFL city, no duplicates. See you next year!

About Mari Taketa

Mari Taketa is a dedicated eater who's as opinionated as she is hungry. She covered everything from neighborhood mom-and-pop places to ethnic eateries to fine dining restaurants on Honolulu's dining scene for Metromix Honolulu and The Honolulu Advertiser's TGIF. Before that, she ate her way through Vietnam, Scotland and Japan, where she lived, traveled or worked, after recovering from a journalism career that included stints as editor-in-chief of Hawaii Business magazine and reporter and editor at The Associated Press. Her goals are to always be hungry for more, and to always want to know what's around the next corner.
