Eating Kalihi, old-style

Sometimes the best food is the kind that reflects the past. Part 1 of an up-close look at three neighborhood classics

Eating Kalihi, old-style

Down on the makai side of Nimitz, surrounded by industrial shops and cinder-block walkups, Alicia's Market is as old-school as they come. The neighborhood store opened in 1949, a full 10 years before statehood.

Today it gets steady business from truckers, construction workers, townie foodies and just about everybody else on the island. Why? Some of the best poke in town, plus Hawaiian food, crack seed, boiled peanuts ... simple, old-fashioned food that brings back memories and makes you feel good.

You just had to post a picture of those Liliha Bakery coco puffs, didn't you?? :P When we were in Hawai'i over the summer, I ended up buying a dozen frozen and packing them in a cooler, along with other food stuffs, and checking that in as baggage. I think the coco puffs only lasted two days...

I've never been to Alicia's or Helena's but I definitely need to add them to my list of must eats for next summer. Can't wait to see what other old school eateries are coming up!

WERUreo coco puffs, coco puffs: u know i never used to like them, always thot they were over-the-top rich. then i got a whole box as a mahalo gift, gave away half and froze the rest. freezing helps cut down the richness, and by the time i gnaw my way to the chantilly, it's back to its melty, buttery self.

p.s. i think u need to come home more than 1x a yr ;)

nonstopmari Believe me, I would love to be able to afford to go home multiple times a year or even move back. Some day hopefully! For now, I need to live vicariously through Nonstop Honolulu!

Alicia's roast pork is easily the best on the island. I'd buy a pound of it and half of it would be gone before I get to my destination cuz I'd be noshing it in my car as I'm driving.

Is this Part 1 for Kalihi or Part 1 for old school neighborhoods? Kalihi has other old time eateries too. Boulevard Saimin (recently just changed the name), Pancake House, Mitsuken, etc.

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

MyongChoi i know, kalihi is one of the richest neighborhoods for old-time eats. i'm working on eating kalihi part 2, and then will move on to other old neighborhoods.

After seeing this gallery, I now feel a trip to Alicia's is in order. I too am a fan of this type of neighborhood food coverage.

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

DianeSeo don't forget to sample the diff poke. go hungry so u pick up extras like boiled peanuts and haupia.

harrycovair 77 pts

DianeSeo nonstopmari Maybe you shouldn't go into Alicia's hungry. Too many choices.

When you go there, try not to wear Michigan State Spartan attire.

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

EO: Helena's used to have Jean Charlot paintings on the walls at the old location. Are they at the School St restaurant? I haven't been there in years and I don't remember. I wonder why all these Chinese ladies make Hawaiian Fuud? How come no Hawaiian ladies making Hawaiian fuud? or do they make only for family?

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

Annoddah_Dave some do! haili's, waiahole poi factory come to mind.

AD, u haven't been to helena's since they moved to school street? omg, go catch up :>

nonstopmari have a look at Gaye Chan's site, downwindproductions.com sometime. Gaye is the head of Art/Photo Dept at UHM. she's also behind those wire recycle cages that have sprung up on the windward side. when she's not smashing the powers that be she is making the most beautiful photographs and photographic art i've ever seen.

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

turkfontaine i will ck it out. just wanted to say i've heard of gaye chan, not only as a longtime artist and activist but also as a sustainable foodie.
