Did this: Eat the Street

Ten food trucks, more food booths, a thousand peeps: Totally epic

Eat the Street (1 of 33)

Eat the Street

By Mari Taketa
Nonstop

An epic night, this town's first Eat the Street food truck rally, and if you were anywhere near the vicinity of Kapiolani Boulevard last night, you knew it.

How epic? For the first time ever in Hawaii, 10 food trucks plus more food booths converged in the parking lot across 24 Hour Fitness. Organizer StreetGrindz.com hoped for 800 eaters; by 7 p.m. there were more than 1,000: foodies, tweeps, lurkers and more, enough to earn a Swarm badge on Foursquare.

Totally chill crowd, which was good because the lines were epic too. As night fell, the wait for food at the most popular trucks stretched to more than an hour, and then the sold-out signs started going up.

Overall assessment? More, please. Honolulu's hungry for mainland-style food truck rallies. Last night absolutely proved it.

You guys are wrongly named, henceforth I will refer to you as Nonstop Eating Honolulu.

hikino 35 pts

dbjack Ha! That tone was set from the get-go when they formed Nonstop. Just look at the staff video introducing everyone--leading it off is thedailydish doing what she does best---eating! Stuffing her face and talking at the same time. "Hi, I'm Cat (mumble, mumble, swallow) Nonstop (stuff burger in mouth) (more mubling)" and it ends with melissa808 pulling out her knife (which she claims is used for cutting up samples--uh, yeah, okay) out of her infamous bag of dastardly deadly destructive devices.

dbjack u have no idea how right u are :>

dbjack 43 pts

nonstopmari Yep. but hey I tell all my mainland friends that when you live Hawaii you get to burn it off year round so you eat a lot more. And toss in the fact that the food is usually better it makes sense Nonstop needs the word Eating in the title.

<Emerging from the dust left behind by Hawaii's first Food Truck Rally> I think I'm almost fully recovered now from last night's festivities mmmm, okay maybe only partially recovered. 'Epic' is the perfect word for last night's turn out.

(Okay, whereu00e2u0080u0099s my podium.)

Mahalo Nui to everyone for supporting our 1st Eat the Street event. How exciting that the entire NonstopHonolulu team was there to support us as well as their appetite!! A special thank you has to go out to my social media friends and everyone who joined us. I really am speechless.

Most importantly I am thrilled for each trucku00e2u0080u0099s success. Mahalo nui to each of you @pacificsoul, @dixiegrill, Malia's Pasteles and Poke, @tacosvicente, Shogunai_Tacos, @xtremetacos, @meltHNL, JoeOnTheGo, Steak Truck, @EatGogi, Le Crepe Cafe AND @LTeatCupcakes for joining in and believing that if 'we build it they will come!'

Lastly, I should mention that Chef Cassie from Jawaiian Irie Jerk called and apologized for not participating in the event. He was very ill. Also, much love to RC from @cafetruck who spent the night in the hospital (really bad migraine episode).

YES, there will be more Eat The Street rallies by www.streetgrindz.com. And, it's going to be Epic-er (lol). Mahalo again and THANK YOU nonstopmari for such a wonderful review.

Until we eat again!

streetgrindz u have earned ur podium! a few months ago u only had a handful of trucks signed on to streetgrindz.com, and now look -- a phenom! truly epic (did i say that already?).

all of us NonstopHonolulu were amazed; i'm just the one who finalized the review/gallery and that's why my name is on it. and like everyone else, i can't wait for the next eat the street!

streetgrindz 30 pts

nonstopmari NonstopHonolulu well... if I may have my podium back I have a few more shout outs to make!! LOL.
Mahalo to all of you! Great video nctrnlbst ( btw did Dixie Grill bring ribs?)

hikino 35 pts

streetgrindz NonstopHonolulu Shogunai_Tacos nonstopmari I was wondering where The Cafe Truck was--it would have been killer to be drinking his 100% Kona and that sinfully wicked Frozen Hot Chocolate. Speedy recoveries to both Chef Cassie and RC.

808marv 107 pts

hikino streetgrindz NonstopHonolulu Shogunai_Tacos nonstopmari Yeah it was too bad for Cafe Truck, I know RC would have been there if he could. I was in line at Joe On The Go and the people behind me were wondering what happened to the frozen hot chocolate on the menu. I told them the news and unfortunately they walked away from the truck. That frozen hot chocolate is slowly building a rep and people wanna try it. And yes it is that good!

hikino 35 pts

808marv streetgrindz NonstopHonolulu Shogunai_Tacos nonstopmari Oh yes it is! RC told me that he has people coming up to him and saying that his version is better than what is served locally or the original in the mainland. Hopefully he'll be there next time.

The twitter gang was out in force last night. With all of that good food gathered in one spot, you know we'll be there. Everything I tried from melt & Gogi before the crowd set in was super. Sorry I wasn't able to try more. Looking forward to the next Eat the Street event.

BIG, BIG MAHALO's has to be sent out to streetgrindz and her husband 808geek.For those that don't know them or haven't met them, http://twitpic.com/3u21ua. The coordination, effort, manpower, and ultimate success is all due to their hard work and perseverance to make their #eatthestreet dream come true.

I asked streetgrindz what her goal was and she said she wanted at least 800 folks at this food truck rally and I honestly believe she exceeded her goal before 7pm. It was almost standing room only at that time.

The most common statements I heard last night, in no particular order:

"Ho da ono." followed by "Mmmpphtgtmmmm" <shouldn't talk with your mouth full>
"Hey, did you try _______?"
"Wow I want another order but I don't want to wait in that line."
"**** look at that line."
"Where's the rubbish can?"
"Mommy, I have to use the bathroom."

I'm up for another truck rally. Anyone else ready!

This looked like a lot of fun, too bad I wasn't able to attend. My bro @myama99 went, and said it was EPIC!!! I think what this shows is 1) that the Food Truck Craze is alive and well here in Hawaii, and 2) the power of social media/twitter/facebook/etc. I seriously doubt that they'd have as many people out there were it not for sites like Nonstop, and other content driven websites. It's an awesome thing. Great job to the nonstop team for the wonderful coverage. I felt like I was THERE... but wasn't... so maybe I had like an out of body experience... or then again, maybe not... HAHA Have a GREAT VH07V Friday everyone! (how's dat reference eh WorldWideEd

Great night, great crowd, great food! If it wasn't clear before, Eat The Street showed that the Food Truck 2.0 craze is definitely on in Honolulu. Not only did I get to meet some of the NonstopHonolulu crew but I also had a few reunions with old friends as well. Looking back I should have made the rounds as quick as I could since I got there early, I missed a few trucks that I wanted to try like Let Them Eat Cupcakes because I waited a little too long and then the sea of people came in. I'm pretty sure with the success of this first Rally that there be more rallies to come. Big mahalo to streetgrindz and all the food trucks for getting this together!

Melissa808 268 pts

808marv dang it!!! I see you in the photo now!!!
