VIDEO: Wildest ice cream in town

I scream, you scream, we all scream for … garlic shrimp ice cream? Tomato sorbet with prosciutto? A scoop of boozy Corn Flakes? Just watch

Posted June 12, 2012 by Mari Taketa

What went down in Kakaako last Saturday, you had to be there to understand. How one ice cream can taste like shrimp chips. How another tastes like the scent of banana. How Cap’n Crunch can exude fog. How fast whiskey ice cream can make you happy-dizzy.

Nearly 100 people paid $25 each to sample 16 to 19 first-time flavors at Ice Cream Bar&D, Honolulu’s first pop-up featuring experiments in ice creams and sorbets. The favorites? All over the place. Spicy watermelon and tomato with prosciutto were up there. So were garlic shrimp and hurricane popcorn. Cap’n Crunch, of course.

Mine? Harvey Slocombe, banana leaf, red curry carrot, spicy watermelon. And the funnest ice cream of all: the smoking-cold Cap’n Crunch Oops! All Berries.

If you missed this, don’t worry. With both sessions sold out, organizers are promising more to come: more pop-ups, featuring more dessert chefs, with even more flavor experiments — can you say chawanmushi?!

EO:  Pretty wild stuff.  I’m a traditionalist but willing to try…I love ice cream as my body shape will attest.

BTW I had the Humphry Slocombe “Secret Breakfast” ice cream in SF. I didn’t post it on my blog but it’s in my Flickr album.

Some will be good in 4 stars dinner in between entries dessert.  Now many 4 to 5 stars restaurants are doing so and very chic indeed.   It no longer just for ending of the meal now.  Wonder if there going be a cucumber sorbert?

@Melissa808 this needs to be on a menu somewhere in hnl. daniel skurnick said it wasn’t much of a challenge to make. he’s aiming for a dashi-based chawanmushi ice cream next time

@nonstopmari Yes, it was 2-7:30 that Saturday. Malcolm had another engagement that day so I wouldn’t have been able to sneak out anyway.

the decadence. only a rotting capitalistic system could conceive of such a hedonistic display of egregious consumption, while workers suffer with only 31 flavors from Baskin Robbins.

i can almost taste the Hurricane Butter;  no, i CAN taste it. Cuc! put on your Prada sneaks! we’re going out for ice cream!

Oh so the french fry was a topping and not mixed in?  I saw the tweet of the purchase of 20 or so orders of fries from McDonald’s “Epic Meal Time” style for this event lol.  What were the comments on that one?  The Hurricane Butter looked very appealing. Not so sure about “cream of mushroom” ice cream.  Can’t wait to see what they come up with for the next one!

@808marv i didn’t hear much abt the truffle mac fries, but i can tell u i didn’t taste any truffle. wish i cd have had more fries to swipe thru the soft serve. hurricane popcorn was a winner (mochi crunch + ice cream works), but i think u’d be surprised at what u’d find urself impressed w/.
