Wine for breakfast? It’s not a bad idea, especially if you’re with other women, talking business. Christa Wittmier of Young’s Market Company, the alcohol distributor, invited me to a women’s breakfast this morning at the Beach House at the Moana, featuring winemaker Kate Madigan of St. Francis Winery in Sonoma. It was nice to chat about business, leadership, and, of course, food and wine. One of the neat things about having Kate there is the fact that there aren’t many female winemakers in the world. There are a lot in California, of course; but the alcohol industry at all levels, globally, is dominated by men, so it’s interesting to see women rise through the ranks (if and when they ever do).
In any case, it was nice to have bonding time and learn more about how progressive St. Francis Winery is. Better yet, we tasted four popular wines from the St. Francis portfolio after breakfast to get familiar with them. Here’s what we had:
I also interviewed Kate to talk a little about being a winemaker, and what makes St. Francis different. I apologize for the sound issues … I know I should use a microphone, but I’ve been gun-shy ever since my disastrous Brian Yang Chinatown video! Anyway, enjoy.
