Where I’d tell the Obamas to eat

The Eagle has landed, again. Let’s hope the First Family taps in to Nonstop Honolulu for advice on where to eat this time

The Eagle has landed, and the first family is again spending their Christmas holiday in Hawaii. I have to admit, sometimes I cringe a little when I see them eating at the same places, especially shave ice, every time. The places they choose are all right, but in my opinion, not always the best for a presidential palate — more so because that palate was born and raised here. I also wonder how much of his boyhood local grindz Mr. Obama shares with his family.

In a way, I understand why the Obamas go back to the same spots every year: they’re making memories for their daughters. It doesn’t matter if they’re foodies; hey, maybe the Obamas themselves aren’t foodies, who knows? Hard to tell with busy parents. But, if the Obamas did, by some small chance, want to ask me for some suggestions to shake up their itinerary, I’d give them my “Favorite places to take out of towners” link, plus a few more off the top of my head, below:

Hono's Pineapple Shrimp (1 of 13)

Hono's Pineapple Shrimp

If they take a trek to the North Shore, the Obamas might think about stopping at one of the famous shrimp trucks out there. On Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa, just before McDonald’s and next to Giovanni's, is Hono's. They can get a taste of Hawaii with the pineapple shrimp, which was one of my favorites out there.

Well, Mr. President, those are just a few suggestions to add some variety to your itinerary. I’ve certainly got more. If you have any questions on these places, you know where to find me.  :)

what are his regular spots again? alan wong's, that shave ice place, lucy's. how many yrs in a row? mr president, pay attention!

Melissa808 268 pts

nonstopmari Correct! All of the above as you say. How many years....I forget, is it two years? Anyway, I cringe, I cringe. And if the Obamas don't take my advice, maybe the press corps will.

Melissa808 nonstopmari This is the second year he's been here as President, but he came the year before as President-elect (making it three total). Maybe moumen and hollyhadsell have a connection or two that they could leverage to get the President's attention?

LMAO see I told you, already saw one retweet from someone telling melissa808 "noooo! don't tell Obama to eat there I'm going tonight!" :-D People here are protective of their grinds!

Maybe tell Prez Obama to go Waipahu for a bucket of Jollibee Chickenjoy and some halo halo right jermel_lynn ? ;-)

Melissa808 268 pts

808marv jermel_lynn I agree! The first family eating halohalo at Jollibee? They totally should expand their cultural horizons!

Good recommendations Melissa. Now my stomach is growling. President would probably get a kick going to Hank's Haute Dogs too...a fellow Chicago native's place. Looking forward to seeing where they turn up around town this time around.

Melissa808 268 pts

nathankam ah yes!! testfyre .... he should do that, too, and get one of their slushes!

Melissa808 268 pts

nathankam livefyre that's weird... I didn't type in "redlongboard."

I just had Pacific Soul's fried chicken a couple days ago. I can't get enough of that stuff! It was my parents' first time and they keep raving about how good the food was (especially the cornbread).

I would add Rainbow Drive-In for their mixed plate and slush float. It doesn't get much more local kine iconic than that :)

808marv 107 pts

MikeSumida Melissa808 Oh yeah Pacific Soul fried chicken. Chicken and waffles...chicken and waffles...but I gotta try that combo plate in the picture too!

Melissa808 268 pts

808marv MikeSumida I think the Obamas did do Rainbow Drive In last time...I wonder what they got? Anyway, now I'm craving testfyre fried chicken. Hungry!

harrycovair 77 pts

808marv MikeSumida Melissa808 You MUST TRY the Seafood Jambalaya. My fave over the rest of his items, even the Fried Chicken.

MikeSumida 29 pts

harrycovair 808marv Melissa808 Thanks, Harry, I'll give it a shot next time I'm there!

Oh man, you saw all that garlic on the shrimp? I would just pour that over my rice and eat it like that. Butter and garlic....Heaven. Muah kiss me you fool. hee hee

Melissa808 268 pts

Ynaku I was thinking the same thing about the butter & garlic on the rice! Oh, but the shrimp....

turkfontaine There will be more by the time you return!

Ooohh, fuud prom again. I don't remember my Shrimp plate from Honu's having that much Garlic.

If President Obama does visit City Square (Sugoi's, Utage, and Young's Fish Market) he's going to create a traffic mess in the area. I'd better get my Lau Lau fix before he shows up.

You're out of town while he's here. Awww, you're going to miss the traffic jam when he visits some of the places you recommend.

Hey Mr. President, you want local food done with a local touch, try ono to go . The Ahi Citrus Furikake is The Bom... uhhh, I mean it's really ONO. How good is the place? I've only been there three times this week and it's only Thursday. Call ahead though so you don't have to wait.

Melissa808 268 pts

harrycovair ono to go LOL almost recommended ono to go but then I tried to imagine the president driving up behind Butterfly Lounge.....

808marv 107 pts

Melissa808 harrycovair ono to go LOL also the Gogi Taco Truck is next door to a Aaxtion Video and just down the block from Femme Nu et al. But that won't happen 'cause Gogi's shut down 'till the new year anyway unfortunately. :-( Yeah I think if The Prez wants some Sugoi's or OnoToGo he might have to send a "runner" to pick up the food...don't wanna piss off your Hawaii constituents by delaying or denying their grinds!

harrycovair 77 pts

ono to go Ooops, that should be Teriyaki Citrus Furikake Salmon.
