What’s your passion?

Everyone needs to have a passion — it doesn’t just give meaning to your life, it benefits the community as a whole. What’s yours?

About a week ago, I had lunch with my friends Doc Rock and Phillip Han and we started talking about how a lot of people in Hawaii tend to be apathetic. (Sorry, but it’s true.) Doc is actually writing a book, and in doing his research, he’s been asking people what their passion is. What is it that makes you get up in the morning? What’s your purpose in life? Or what makes you happy?

It shocks us to find that people don’t even say, “I don’t know.” Many of them say, “Nothing.” In this video blog, Doc talks about that, and explains that even if your passion is fantasy football or collecting widgets, you should claim it. And if you really can’t think of anything that makes you happy, you should find a charity to give of your time, because helping those less fortunate will, in turn, help you find happiness in yourself.

I decided to do a blog of my own to re-promote this concept, because … well, it’s true! It makes me crazy when people let apathy consume them. It’s the reason Hawaii has the lowest voter turnout in the country, and the lowest response to the U.S. Census. Like Doc and Phillip, one of my passions is helping people, which is why I volunteer for Lanakila Pacific Meals on Wheels and the YMCA. When you realize how rich your life is compared to those who seek shelter through nonprofit organizations, you realize a lot of good things about yourself.

Well, last night, I met the new president and CEO of the YMCA of Honolulu, Michael Broderick. As he introduced himself to the Central YMCA Board, he talked about his last job as a family court judge. He said that he would ask the young men and women who were being sentenced for juvenile crimes, what they felt their purpose in life was. “What’s your passion?” he would ask, and was disappointed to find that these young people were so disengaged with society they would often answer, “Nothing.”

Here’s his video response to why he wanted to lead the YMCA of Honolulu, and how finding your passion builds strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Okay, I threw that last part in, but you get what I mean.

What’s your passion? What do you do that makes you happy in every day life?

you know Melissa, I had this convo w/ someone onboard the Missouri this week... I told them, that I thought teaching was my passion, but I found that I wasn't very good as a classroom teacher. I've found that my passion is telling stories... I get paid to tell the story of the USS Missouri... I'm passionate about sharing that story w/ people... I guess my passion isn't as lofty as doc rock's book writing, but, it's something to be passionate about, and I guess I'm better than those people who say that they're passionate about "nothing..." p.s.- doc rock's "in my skine'" podcast got me writing in my moleskine journal again too... thanks doc :>

NeilYamamoto Don't sell yourself short Neil, I think you are wrong but in a good way. It turns out what you are teaching and doing by telling stories is actually the best form of teaching. The thing instructors are taught at most schools in indoctrination not really teaching. I hope this makes you feel better about sharing your stories. Hey Orators were the original teachers.

I love the fact you are journaling... "Keep The Pen Moving"

Aloha

docrock Thanks Doc... I really think that teaching IS story-telling... and I know that I'm so blessed to be 28 and have found something that I truly, truly love... your podcast got me thinking too, when you asked Phil what the catalyst was for his finding his passion... For me, it was after I had quit teaching, and my dad (a 42 year Army vet) said, dammit, son, you're not gonna sit on your @$$ and loaf for the rest of your life... find something that YOU want to do FOR YOU!!!" so I did... and I've never looked back since... Thanks to the three of you (Doc, Melissa, and Philip) for being such inspirations for all of us.

Holla!

Hmmm, well I still worry about my son even though he is 30. And, there are several young people I really want to do well. Have done a fair amount of volunteering, but I'm no longer so passionate about that. Hmmm, Cleveland Indians (yeah even though we are like a AAA team) I still care. Food, check. Good brews, check (only nowadays the limit is about two). I used to care a lot more about politics than I do now. Hahahaha, in a previous life I was banned from certain events at Kamehameha Schools because I was vocally opposed to the KSBE trustees (Wong, Peters, Lindsay, et. al) and had letters and op eds published. Yeah, I used to be a troublemaker.

i've had passions for different pursuits at different ages. at nine, it was for fossilized megalodon shark's teeth i'd dig out of the Calvert cliffs on the Chesapeake Bay. at twenty, it was for little English sports cars. at thirty seven and for twenty years onward, it was being the father of a boy who, at five, looked up at me and with all seriousness said: "dad, i thought you knew everything". today, he's 24, and i think he knows everything.

i've had passion for my work, my wife, and the Lone Star State. now i'm in the fourth quarter. the part of life that hurts the worst, just like it hurts my Detroit Lions. now my passion is, i just want to be a better man.

Melissa Thank you for you wonderful blog. I hope this will inspire people to get out there and do something. If nothing else I hope people will start teaching their kids, friends and family members about giving gifts other than cash donations. The hands on really helps sink in the need to be charitable. Please follow my In My Skine Blog and our Podcast at http://www.inmyskine.com

One of the hardest parts about doing something is actually doing it. You hear it all the time u00e2u0080u0094 I should do this. Or I should launch that, but it rarely happens. So if you're out there, actually DOING your passion, you've achieved something.

I commend these dudes for getting out there and talking about it. Doc is always in to something new, trying something out and always always talks about it. Through blogs, on twitter, etc. and it's good to see him taking his friends along for the ride.

About passion: you know, when I was younger, I remember really soaking things in, thinking outside the box and being super creative. Now, a little older, it's my JOB to be creative, but I feel like I've lost touch with what the essence of creativity really is. It's all about bottom line, it's all about results, it's all about bills, hustle, bustle and presentation. I have a passion for creating. Although things tend to get in the way and noisy it up, weather it's digital, online, offline, photography, business, I just love to create, be involved and do stuff.

A little vague, but I guess maybe I'm still searching for it? What's YOUR passion, Melissa? What makes you tick?

johngarcia Well said! For me, as mentioned in the blog, I do get off on helping people. That's important. I want the people around me to be happy, so I can be happy, too! Outside of that, I love food, travel, and social media! I'm also a bit of a "deal junkie."

johngarcia Thanks you JG, I appreciate the kind words. Thanks to Melissa for putting this out there. I hope it reaches a lot of people and inspires them to do something.
I'll be using my In My Skine Podcast and blog (http://www.inmyskine.com) to share my inspirations and life lessons as well as stuff from my book. Please give me any feed back you may have. Aloha

johngarcia you are definitely creative,John. and all creative people do get bogged down in the day to day business of dealing with the world and what it wants from you and working with people who are less concerned with the creative process and more concerned with the bottom line. the main thing for you to keep glued in your brain is: NEVER DOUBT YOUR CREATIVE INSTINCT

johngarcia 180 pts

docrock turkfontaine Melissa808 Melissa u00e2u0080u0094 maybe that's what it is? The bottom line really is being able to provide a service to help someone or solve a problem. Maybe it's not so much creating, but more being able to help someone in need.

Doc u00e2u0080u0094 Keeping an eye on your blogs. We should do a collab on something!

Turk u00e2u0080u0094 You're absolutely right about being bogged down with daily details and losing touch of your creativity. I often think back to the days when I didn't really care about much except how a photo would turn out, or how cool of a layout I can make in Photoshop. Need to get back to those roots.

Thanks for the great comments!

Wine Gurl: Thanks for the interview. It is interesting that in our society there are still those that are in it not for themselves but for the enrichment of the society. A true qualitative virtue. My passion is kids, I enjoy their naivete, enthusiasm, unbiased outlook, laughter, willingness to learn new things, and ability to not dwell on sadness. I volunteer with Little League Baseball. My other passion is FUUD!

Melissa808 268 pts

Annoddah_Dave volunteerism is the best! There are, indeed, many people who are always looking to enrich society, even in today's busy world. I actually heard Michael's entire career story, which was interesting in itself but too long for the blog. When he got to the part about "What's your passion?" I nearly fell off my chair and knew I had to grab him for an interview.
