Welcome to Vegas, baby

In my first 24 hours in Vegas, I’ve eaten, drank, gambled, and had three tweetups. Oh, and walked through the casino in my pajamas

Merry Christmas from Las Vegas!

It’s been just 24 hours, but seems like I’ve been here a long time already due to the time change and just being on the go since I landed — literally. As soon as I got to my hotel at about 11:30 p.m., I headed out for sushi with Twitter friend John Katagi (@Burajiru). Once back at the hotel, I just had to get some gambling in, so I didn’t get to bed till about 3 a.m.

Since I had to pick up my car and tweet up with more Twitter friends at noon, I couldn’t really sleep in, but I couldn’t wake up. I threw on a regular top over my pajama pants, and headed down to the Main Street hotel lobby (figuring few people get up early in Vegas) for coffee. The coffee cart that I remembered is no longer in the lobby, and surprise, people do wake up for breakfast. I had to trudge through the casino and to the mezzanine with unbrushed hair, no makeup, and yes, pajama pants to get my java on. When I finally got my coffee, a woman turned to me and smiled. “First cup today, huh?” I tried not to make eye contact or look at my pajama pants. “Is it that obvious?” I asked. No answer.

Well, despite the less than stellar start to my day, it turned out to be full and fun. My one lament is that the casinos don’t allow photos, because some of the funniest moments happen when you’re gambling. All I can tell you is, the hot new interactive slot machine is The Amazing Race machine set, which we played at Main Street Station. It’s interesting on its own, but more fun when all four seats are filled. If someone in the set of four slots gets an “Amazing Race” bonus, everyone gets to play. The subsequent Ticket Challenge sent me and Julie into a digging frenzy as we desperately clawed at the touch screen to get our tickets first. Here’s a tame version of people digging for their virtual ticket:

Fun, huh? We kind of drew a crowd with our crazy “digging” on the slot machine screen. Can’t wait to do it again tonight! Anyway, here’s a quick snapshot of what I did, ate, and drank in my first 24 hours:

My Twitter friend, John Katagi (@Burajiru) took two friends from Paraguay to the Grand Canyon. On the way back, they stopped in Las Vegas on the day I arrived, so we tweeted up.

I arrived at 10:45 p.m., but it's suprisingly hard to find good places in Vegas that are open that late. Thanks to Los Angeles Times' Jen Leo's suggestion, we ended up at Sushi Samba in the Palazzo. Interestingly enough, this worked out since John spends a lot of time in Brazil (thus the Twitter name).

not even a whole day and you're already a train wreck, knocking back coffee in your pajamas, in public. it's wonder security didn't mistake you for a bag lady and throw you out on the sidewalk. it's just sad, i tells ya, sad. i hope this will not be the high point of your Vegas visit.

turkfontaine That was the high point, all right! BTW I didn't drink the coffee in public. I only bought it.

Merry Christmas! Sounds like you're having fun. I must get back up there soon. Like that touchscreen game, had a feeling that type of technology would work its way into casino games. Better than cranking a slot (or slut? haha check melissa808 's tweets) machine arm over and over right?

Have you tried the fried Twinkie bar and/or Oreos at Mermaids Casino? I always wanted to but for some reason never got around to it. Only 99 cents! Anyways looking forward to more post from the 9th island!

808marv I did try the fried Twinkies and Oreos two years ago. Surprisingly, I didn't care for the Oreos! The frying made it mushy. The fried Twinkie was aight, tho. I suddenly felt very Southern.

Melissa808 808marv You have't tried Suth'n till you've had Fried Butter. A friend in Texas told me about it last year.

INOB FUUD PROM! YAAAAYYY!!! That INOB looks really empty. Must be one of the joints off of the strip.

Gawd that Japanese style salt and pepper squid with Panko looks delicious! Funny that you mentioned that your super large kernel of Corn was sweet. Buds that came back from Machu Picchu and the surrounding countries all said that that the larger kernel Corn was more tasteless and starchier than the US hybrid grown corn. Love the rest of the fuud prom shots too.

Saw your tweet with the two "Dice" walking around Fremont Street. The first thing that came to mind was "No Pass". The second thought was "OH CRAP"!

You're not the first person walking around the Casino with jammies on. Seen many over the years.

Good Luck on the Machines and Tables. Don't forget, when everyone arrives commandeer a Pai Gow Table. If the Dealer is the House then let him/her figure out your hand for you.

harrycovair Funny, the place was empty at noon but filled up like crazy at 2 pm! We think maybe people were out shopping or something, and then forced to have a late lunch. But it is off the strip.

I agree, the corn was starchier. But it was kind of sweet, too! I'm sure they're the kind they use for Corn Nuts.

Melissa808 You want to see a crazy INOB. If you're in the neighborhood drive by the INOB at Tropicana and Industrial (1 block West of I-15) around lunch time on a normal work day. Line goes out the door and the car service backs up to Industrial Road.

I can only imagine what the foot traffic looks like when the bigger conferences come to town.

What's that... I hear the Pai Gow table calling you or is it the Craps table???

harrycovair Melissa808 I think I went to that INOB on Tropicana and Industrial 'cause I remember that place being absolutely jam packed. It took a while to get our food but oh it was worth it. Still must try "animal style".

Melissa808 269 pts

808marv harrycovair awwww, I've had INOB before, animal style. I just like the veggies raw! I've been to the one on Tropicana, too. This one was so much easier to get to and less frantic, so unless I'm buying from the gift shop, I think I'd like this one better!
