The wonderful new world of weddings

Hawaii weddings have come a long way, and are dreams come true with Finishing Touch

Sandra Williams, left, with Nathan Kam of McNeil Wilson, who does her PR.

A while back, Catherine Toth sat with Sandra Williams of Finishing Touch to learn about etiquette at special events. Yesterday, Sandra held a workshop for brides (and grooms)-to-be at the Ihilani to highlight what she really does: create dream weddings.

I dropped by to visit with my friend and makeup artist Lena Hanson to support our buddy Nathan Kam, who does the PR for Finishing Touch. He was live blogging from the event, which is basically capturing notes as the day unfolds so that people who couldn’t make it, could get an idea of what was covered.

I watched in awe as various vendors took the stage to show samples of their work and share tips on planning the perfect wedding. Weddings have come a long way since my days waitressing banquets at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel in the 90s! The cheesy slideshow has evolved to elaborate, goosebump-inducing video productions, often including footage from the ceremony that can be shared at the reception.

I was going to share some of the tips that I learned yesterday here on my blog, but you might as well get them all at Finishing Touch’s blog via Nathan, here. The one tip that I can give you, as someone who has coordinated a few weddings and has worked in a hotel, is: Unless the outside venue is free, always have your wedding at a hotel. At the end of the day, the final price per head will be the same or less than if you have it at an estate, and the hotel provides everything for you. There’s a lot more frantic running around if you have your wedding catered to a custom venue, with more ala carte costs, more work for your guests in set up and clean up, and less parking.

Here are some highlights from yesterday’s workshop:

Hello Melissa,
masako and I got married at the beach and reception at a restaurant. Nothing fancy, no decorations, plain, simple and cheaper. We were not planning to impress anyone, it was just about us and dinner with friends and family.

M When in Hawaii....gotta take advantage of the setting! yes!

I have to agree with your tip - having it at a hotel is sooo much easier. Less vendors you have to juggle with. My motto is - keep it simple!

Melissa808 268 pts

Nanigurl I know, right? So much less hassle & worry when you do it at a hotel.

Melissa808 we had ours at the Halekulani and their service was 5-star. Everything went w/o a hitch and the staff was very professional. The only drawback is that the ceremonies are held in the courtyard so you don't get the beach/ocean backdrop, but, I think the courtyard is a lot more comfortable for the guests.

Melissa808 Nanigurl Having it at a hotel is definitely most convenient. But if you are the kind of bride who likes customization on food, decor, ambiance... etc, private estate is probably a better fit. Private estates / venues provide a blank canvas to work with. Some of our most beautiful and memorable events took place at private estates. However, I do LOVE working at a hotel because the elements are more controlled (no wind, don't have to worry about rain...etc.), much more comfortable to work at :)

This is why I love weddings (and always kicking myself for not having put more thought into my own!). Definitely love the new trends and all the touches I see in the photos - way to go Nate and Sandra!

Melissa_Kim Thanks Melissa! Like you, my wedding was SIMPLE! Everyone always ask if I had a big wedding - nope! Me too, I wish I had more taste back then when I got married haha...

rules of thumb: 1) the wedding should be approximately one half of the cost of the divorce. if you live in an alimony state, one tenth. 2) cost for second marriage weddings may be equal to the first, but the 'romantic index' should be considerably diminished. 3) if there is a third and subsequent weddings, you are Larry King and you are an idiot.

Just celebrated my 29th anniversary. Wedding was nothing fancy but being with family and friends made it the best wedding.

But I will accept being invited to fancy weddings. I do own several suits and I wear ties :-)

Ynaku Agreed! I love intimate weddings with only close friends and families :)

You're not kidding when you say weddings have changed! Today's weddings make the weddings of yesteryear seem plain and tacky! Would to get married all over again, but only if I don't have to pay for it! :) BTW - I eat Essence Kwans chocolates on a semi-regular basis. SO YUM! Very good chocolates!

CindySJ Choco Essence's truffle bar was a bit hit at the after party! So cute too :)

Having worked with Sandra and her team at Finishing Touch the past few months, I know how much love was put into this event. I'm incredibly proud of what she was able to accomplish in her first year with Social Light. Fantastic turnout of eager brides (and grooms)-to-be in attendance. Supportive industry professionals and vendors who shared invaluable information about how to plan efficiently. And a wonderful showcase of food and drinks. Couples these days are lucky to have so many more creative options available to them as they plan. One part that really blew me away was the videography portion. My how far the wedding videos have come. They look like mini motion pictures now...and all editable on the same day. Amazing! Congrats to Sandra, the Finishing Touch team, and everyone involved. A really inspiring day that taught me a lot about what to think about for my next client event.
