The Good Table 2010

Mahalo to all the restaurants who participated in last night’s The Good Table. Here’s what we had at Doraku

By Melissa Chang on October 8, 2010

Last night was the biggest fundraiser of the year for Lanakila Pacific’s Meals on Wheels, an event called The Good Table. It’s different because instead of having one event in one spot like most other organizations, Lanakila Pacific enlists the kokua of our local restaurants. On one specific night, these generous businesses donate a special, creative, upscale dinner for a table for four (sometimes, more than one table), with all the proceeds going to Lanakila’s Meals on Wheels program. (Here’s how it works, if you want to bid next year.)

Last year, after running around taking photos at all the restaurants, Ed Morita and I saw what the people were eating and decided that we’d buy a table next time. Usually you have to bid on a table, Priceline-style, but we bought a table at Doraku outright when they opened up a second table. Here’s how dinner went:

Doraku owner Kevin Aoki and chef Hide Yoshimoto went to both Good Tables to meet us personally and answer questions. Nice touch!

If you want to see all the photos from all of last night’s tables, click here. Last year, The Good Table raised more than $160,000, which translates into 21,300 meals for Hawaii’s homebound seniors. I don’t know yet what the numbers are for this year’s event, but I know they outperformed 2009.

Mahalo to the restaurants who participated this year — your support was phenomenal, and I’m looking forward to great things next year! Here’s a quick and uplifting video that promotes Lanakila Pacific’s vision to wipe out senior hunger by 2020.

I can't imagine the sacrifices you go through for such a good cause :-) So much fun eating with friends. OK back to eating my Loco Moco.

Wine Gurl:
Just had dinner again with your pix! Don't know about the "naked sushi" pix/caption, it could mean Lena has no top!!??? Thank you for supporting this cause...I am nearly there myself!!! What no wine, no sake??? Ergo, no emotion! Have you noticed a difference between Atlantic Lobster and Pacific Lobster?

Annoddah_Dave We had some sake--Dassai 50! But it was so dark and sake is clear, so....very hard to photograph. :(

I don't eat enough robster to know the difference...I better investigate!

Melissa808 Wine Gurl: No excuses for no photo. Saying that the sake was crear and prace too dark, I don't buy...Sake cup is crear when empty! Robster difference easy but don't eat too much or it will stick in your "claw". I prefer Pacific but will eat Altantic in a "pinch"!??

Hide's deconstructed rainbow roll, now that's Fuud Prom.

Good to know that Meals on Wheels will be getting a large donation to keep their service to the community active. The still need more volunteers to help deliver food.

harrycovair Big props to RickNakama for being a volunteer! I think@Mel808 helped him deliver last week.

Melissa808 harrycovair RickNakama@Mel808 lanakila meals on wheels is awesome! (ooh, an ! slipped in) they've been suffering hard times like all non-profits, but instead of just soliciting donations they've stepped it up and begun offering services and wow ideas like open table to bring in cash. next yr i'm in!
