San Francisco: Off The Grid

We went back to the big food truck event that inspired Eat The Street, both now bigger than ever

No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to one of their Off The Grid food truck rallies. When I first blogged about it in 2010, it seemed so big, with more than a dozen trucks, carts, and tents in a parking lot at Fort Mason — not to mention, it was the inspiration for Honolulu’s own Eat The Street. Well, here we are two years later, and the event is more than double in size and attendance. It’s still the place to be on a Friday night in San Francisco, despite the trucks having daily mini rallies now.

We hoped to have a little tweet up at Off The Grid to get together with the Hawaii runners in town for the rally, as well as the Hawaii expats we know.

We hit the creme brûlée tent first, because these guys always run out of products quickly. Who cares about dessert first?

This is my first post i had ever read about that truck interesting truck service for eating best foods.

I've actually never been to the OtG at Ft. Mason. too much hassle to get there early on a friday night.   trucks are everywhere, though, so i get my fill.  a few stops near my workplace in south san francisco (the city of ssf, not the southern part of sf) and OtG has a weekly thing in san mateo, where I live. 

funny thing is that a lot of the sf trucks never make it down to us  (different county so different permits, I think). CuN is based in San Mateo (and has a B&M location in san mateo), so I see them a lot. An the Go is down here a lot as well. the ones I really want to try are Hapa Ramen and WingWings but they're never near me.  heard good things about them.

did you get to try the Daniel burger from Seoul on Wheels?

yah, Hapa Ramen is no longer with Off the Grid, from what I understand, but WingWings is. However, you can catch him at the Ferry Building during the Farmer's Market days if you make it to SF. He's opening a restaurant soon! But I hear there will be no ramen at the brick-and-mortar spot.

 Melissa808 I know.  Hapa is kinda a rock star in the food biz up here. seems like mostly pop-ups.  gotta try it sometime, but I'm never in the city at night.

for southbay trucks, you should try sanguchon, if you're ever around the peninsula.  it's peruvian sandwiches and owned by a guy with a bunch of bay area restaurants including one michelin starred one.

Those dumplings are indeed old school style but lot of people like it that way.  It does goes back to Honolulu and popo and mom days making it at home.
