San Francisco: Dinner at Skool

Looking for an über-hip, out-of-the-way dining experience in San Francisco? Go to Skool

We were looking for a nice but casual place to eat for our night before the Bay to Breakers run, and one of my online friends, Phil Napsha, suggested we go to Skool. If you haven’t heard of it, you should — Skool is a hip, eclectic, out-of-the-way spot that will have very few tourists and a lot of good food. The main owners, Toshihiro Nagano and Andy Mirabell, are both from Blowfish Sushi in San Francisco. They know a thing or two about serving Japanese food to über-cool American diners, and we had to try it to see for ourselves.

Phil and his wife Marisa joined us … you see, they’re my friends from the Fodors.com online community. Before there were tweet ups, there were GTGs (short for Get ToGethers), where online friends could meet up in real life. The difference is, when Fodors people meet up, it’s often in a different city, since we are all travel-minded. If you go to Fodors to participate, look for Phil — his screen name is KalKahuna.

We had a wonderful dinner, as you can see by these photos. I wasn’t sure if we would be able to get a table for a group on a busy Saturday night, but Phil pulled some strings and got us in.

Dinner at Skool

Skool is a casual-smart, hip spot in SoMa — okay, it's way south of Market — that is always packed, despite its out of the way location. Skool employed local designers who utilized recycled and refurbished materials to create the cool look.

strings were meant to be pulled, and what is 'an after dinner cigarette'? isn't SF an amazing city for food? and it's so little, you can walk to anywhere. try to find as many great restaurants in Dallas. try to walk in Dallas. they may still smoke after dinner there. i know they smoke after sex there, 'cause i watch tee vee sometimes.

this was the best B2B you've posted. i think next year Gene Park should go,since he is now a part of the 'junket' world and no longer constrained by pesky journalistic ethics. if you get south of Long Beach anytime soon, have your people call my people. we'll do lunch

turkfontaine HEY....this was not a junket! We all paid for everything on this trip with money earned by any means possible. But glad you liked the B2B stuff, it's always more fun with more people. When I did it by myself last year, it was a lot more lonely.

So many places to eat in SF. I need to figure out how to get there quarterly.

Melissa808 duly noted. no consideration was proffered or accepted for any of the foregoing meals, lodging or transportation. the author owns no stock in any company associated with B2B and  no inducements or propositions were offered the author by naked men on Hayes St. however, the same cannot be said of offers, inducements or propositions to same from the author herself

nonstopmari I forgot to tell you: 1. Kal wants to meet you IRL so badly, they're FINALLY scheduling an Oahu stopover this December on their way to AND from Kauai. They aren't sure that you'll have time for them on the way over, so that's why they're scheduling 2 stopovers. 2. IamQ (Bill Quarre) says our Kickin Kajun video had him in stitches.
