San Francisco: Bay to Breakers 2012

Yesterday was the crazy 101st annual Bay to Breakers fun run in San Francisco, with wild people in costumes — and others with none at all

Posted May 21, 2012 by Melissa Chang

One of the wildest fun runs in the world was muted extensively last year, when longtime sponsor ING pulled out due to community complaints about drunkenness, lewd acts, and runners relieving themselves in people’s yards. Print shop Zazzle stepped up to save the day, and I’m glad to report that Bay to Breakers is back in full force.

The weather was nice yesterday, so there were more nudists out than I can remember in recent years. (Don’t forget, in San Francisco, you can be naked, but you can’t be drunk.) Also, there were a lot more people smoking weed on the course than I can remember. (Don’t forget, in California, you can get marijuana for “medicinal purposes.”)

Here are some scenes from yesterday’s Zazzle Bay to Breakers. You can also see more photos, here or on Storify, here. (Also if my captions seem incomplete, I apologize, as I’m rushing out the door. Can’t be blogging the whole time I’m traveling!)

The scene on the BART at 6 a.m.

I also did a quick little video of stuff we saw on the run that couldn’t be captured only in photos, like the house parties, or the annual running of the salmon. It’s a little choppy, but I hope you like it.

@sakeshop Actually, there were young, fit people….but they were running too fast to get a photo. I kid you not.

@ValerieM thanks! nowhere for a while…I rarely travel during the summer, since that’s peak season and the chances of having screaming babies on the plane is higher! I’m actually still blogging about SF, just very behind. LA is up next, too!
