Quick bites in Hilo

A quick day trip to Hilo proved to be a very delicious excursion

By Melissa Chang on April 1, 2011

Yesterday, I flew to Hilo with my business partner, Russ Sumida, to conduct some training for our client. While there for one quick day, we figured we’d try to squeeze in a quick taste of this side of the Big Island. Who knew there would be so much to try?

Hilo Lunch Shop (1 of 20)

Hilo Lunch Shop

Even with a bumpy start (read: missed flight), we managed to get in a little Hilo food time. We were overwhelmed by the responses on Twitter and Facebook by the few posts we did from the Big Island.

We were bowled over by the response from our online friends about the many things to eat in Hilo. There just wasn’t enough time! Hopefully I can get back to try some of the other places you recommended.

As Big Island residents, Cafe Pesto is one of our favorites, only topped by Hilo Bay Cafe, which isn't on Hilo Bay if you're looking.

M hahaha if you do, can you pick up some nori chicken for me?? hee hee

BAH, Today is Monday and Hilo Lunch Shop is closed. Hee hee

Oooh nice choice. And yep gotta pair the Eggplant with spam with a musubi, plaini or the one with the ume inside. The cone sushi pretty good too.

Another place we go is Kawamoto's on Kilauea.

All this is making me hungry, better go make my PBJ :-(

Melissa808 204 pts

Ynaku yah, I had no idea! But that thing is so huge....one eggplant spam tempura and a musubi is enough for breakfast!!

Next time, I want to try Kawamoto's.

Delicate Blossom,

Are those "delicate blossoms" on the dishes you pictured from Cafe Pesto? Or is it fake stuff. Strawberry mochi is the bomb!

Melissa808 204 pts

Annoddah_Dave Those are, indeed, edible blossoms!!

Muziker 5 pts

In Los Angeles, iced tea and lemonade is called an "Arnold Palmer" since that was his favorite drink.

Melissa808 204 pts

Muziker aha! the mix sounded familiar.

All I can say is yum, yum, yum! Haven't been to Hilo in ages! Need to go back!

Melissa808 204 pts

CindySJ I had not been in ages, myself! It was a nice reminder of what is there.

are you kidding me?.... it's not even lunch time yet and you post these kind of pictures... nori wrapped mochiko chicken...*wimper* spam-stuffed eggplant tempura... *cry* why don't we have stuff like that on this island? note to Nonstop team: make nori wrapped mochiko chicken and spam stuffed eggplant for next ETS

Melissa808 204 pts

MoOgooGuypAN there's a lot of stuff out there that Oahu doesn't have and I think the same thing....why? why? why? how much could it cost to wrap a mochiko chicken in nori, when the pleasurable returns are priceless??? why?

dkMOMUS 6 pts

Melissa808 MoOgooGuypAN noooo! keep everything where it is. the biggest deterrent to eating something like Homemade Bakery manju from Maui now is because you can buy it at every supermarket on other islands. No reason to covet anymore.

Melissa808 204 pts

dkMOMUS MoOgooGuypAN good point! Hmmmm

GuidoP 5 pts

Melissa808 MoOgooGuypAN Someone on Oahu PLEASE bring nori chicken here! I've tried to duplicate it in my own kitchen without success. Besides Hilo Lunch Shop, this place called Mizoguchi's across Kaikoo Mall on Kilauea Avenue used to have it. I don't even know if it's still there!

Melissa808 204 pts

GuidoP MoOgooGuypAN we must investigate!

GuidoP 5 pts

MoOgooGuypAN You can get the spam-stuffed eggplant on Oahu at Caryn's Okazuya on Young Street. Pretty good!

Melissa808 204 pts

GuidoP MoOgooGuypAN this is true! Caryn's is small, though. It's the long eggplant with just a chunk of spam, which seems so tiny now that I've eaten at Hilo Lunch Shop!
