Surprise! Meet the new John Dominis

Posted September 15, 2012 by Melissa Chang

Out of the blue, I got an invitation to see the new 53 By the Sea, and was told it was at the old John Dominis site. I didn’t even realize there was something new there, as it seemed to have transformed overnight. The new place is so dramatically different that I had to take you for a virtual tour on my blog, but keep in mind that the original structure is actually still there. The former restaurant had the permits for being over the water grandfathered in, and if they tore it down, they would have to start over — but with current permits that don’t allow it to be so close to the edge.

Here’s a quick tour of the place, with a look at some of the menu items we sampled. If you want to see video news coverage, click here.

Imagine how my jaw dropped — as I imagine yours is dropping as you read this — when I pulled up to this structure in place of the old restaurant. Whoa! I didn't see this one coming.

Wow… big change. I remember eating there a long time ago at the Sunday Buffet. It was a bit pricey but a great atmosphere. The food in the pics looks outstanding.

@dbjack The view is amazing! I need to go back for an actual meal to be sure, though!
