Joy of Sake 2012

About 1,200 people filled the Pier 2 Cruise Terminal last night, to partake of the largest sake-tasting celebration outside of Japan. Yes, the annual Joy of Sake was bigger than ever, with more than 360 bottles of sake and 16 local restaurants for people to enjoy. And they did. —Photo by Mari Taketa

filled w/ regret for all i missed: tastes of zaku and shichida, more tamagawa kinsho, that tyku coconut nigori drink, and all the food i saw endlessly passing by but was too busy to get. otoh, i loved it, loved the new discoveries, meeting the superb gaijin toji who shares my tastes for cedar touches, even in daiginjo, loved the bites i ate (thnx konaish !). want more...

nonstopmari  konaish Did I hear correctly that it was actually closer to 1400 people??

Melissa808  konaish still cking ... i think the organizers are in recovery mode from the entire week, they worked their buns off and were still at it midnite friday, packing and hauling away boxes.

we went into the celebration guesstimating at 1400 but idk yet the final turnout.

Melissa808 that sounds likely. our final count of paid ticketholders (not including restaurants, sake industry, armies of volunteers, media) was 1200. compare: joy of sake new york 600, joy of sake tokyo also about 600.

nonstopmari Sadly, we focused more on the food, so missed out on many good sake.  I didn't even see the Shichida. sakeshop said my favorite Tamagawa "Kinsho" was by Philip Harper.  I'm looking forward to getting a bottle soon. Next year I need a game plan to optimize the night!

konaish i hope phil harper knows how many ppl fell in love w/ his kinsho, which took a silver medal in the daiginjo b category. he was a judge too: he said the opening woody note (cedar) was what kept it from getting a gold, and he also minused points for that, but it's what makes me love this daiginjo.

konaish  Melissa808  Truth be told, Malcolm & I were having such a great time eating & talking w/ friends we didn't get to taste all the sake we wanted to! I guess we were having too much fun to think about work ;p
