Maui: What to do in Hana

In Hana, you’ll always be relaxed, but you’ll never be bored

By Melissa Chang on February 14, 2012

It’s funny — Hana is super rural and seems like it’s the middle of nowhere, but we found ourselves jamming to cram as much activity as we could in the few days we were there. Even with our rigorous schedule, we couldn’t do everything we wanted to do (thus why we need to go back). There are entire islands in this Hawaiian chain that are boring (no names, please), but here in this sleepy little town, we found that you’ll always be relaxed, but you’ll never be bored.

Here are three things that we did on this trip to Hana: an equestrian ride, a shopping (?) trip into the iconic Hasegawa General Store, and a tasting tour of Ono Organic Farms.

Coastal equestrian ride (1 of 26)

Coastal equestrian ride

One of the activities at Travaasa Hana is a one-hour equestrian ride along the coast. The stables are right across the street from the hotel, which is convenient. We met our rides for the day, all mellow.

We learned a lot on our tour, too much to cram into this blog, so you’ll have to see it yourself! But I did have a few minutes at the end to talk to Zack about Ono Farms. Here are some photos, as well, of our walk around the property. (I’m sorry that the end is so abrupt; I was rushing to finish this.)

Haha! I love the "shopping (?)" at Hasegawa! You forgot to mention the famous, and delicious, Hana Hotties Hot Sauce they sell! Anyhoo, love all the pics from Ono- seriously in need of those fresh papaya and lilikoi here on the mainland- what a treat to have eaten all that fruit.. I wish I could have stuffed them all in my suitcase!

PaulaRaeAnderson Paula, it was so nice to meet you!! I forgot about that hot sauce, I really should have gotten some to bring home! And yes...I just loved all of that fruit. Sigh lilikoi.....

I didn't see any mention of it but did you and Julie have time to check out the beaches close to Hana? Kaihalulu (Red Sand Beach) which requires a walk down a slippery trail or Wai`anapanapa State Park which is a Black Sand beach? It's just neat, for lack of a better term, to see the different colors along the shoreline.

harrycovair We checked out one beach from above (sorry I forgot the name) but could only attempt to get to the Red Sand beach. The trail for Kaihalulu is eroded and it was waaaaaayyyy high tide, so it was impossible to get there. Next time.

Melissa808 harrycovair Yes, the path/trail from the road is really 'bus up and not well maintained. It is really a unique red color. I can't recall seeing any other beaches like this in Hawaii.

Where's the bottle of Hana Buttah?

Melissa808 204 pts moderator

harrycovair I have it for you!

Melissa808 Oh sorry, I meant as a post on your medley of photographs. You know, a caption like "Look there really is Hana Buttah."

Sadly, I've never stopped at anyplace else to buy stuff except for Hasegawa and the medical clinic. Now I know to stop off and visit other businesses.

Great post Melissa, and love the funny photo captions. Last time I went to Ono Farms, a lady traveled all the way from Illinois to Hana, just to try the fresh durian. Did you like it? :-)

RebeccaPang1 Thanks Rebecca!! Actually, I've had durian before, and I like it refrigerated (not room temp). Not sure if you've seen, but Mari has done four blogs about durian because she loves it so much. Here's one of them:

I was glad I got to try some of the other exotic fruits, though—stuff that even a local would probably not get to try in their lifetime!

Delicate Blossom: Durian...you just made EO jealous!

Melissa808 204 pts moderator

Annoddah_Dave she wanted me to bring durian back for her but the only one available for sale was a runt, and it was $10.

Melissa808Annoddah_Dave durian must be big, fleshy and fresh. anything less is an injustice to the king of fruits. i've been desperate enough to buy a runt in chinatown. had all of 2 pods. its deliciousness was tinged w/ the bittersweet note of sorrow, just for being so small and fleeting.

Love the article but more importantly did we find out if Zack is married? Girlfriend? Moving away? Visit's Honolulu? Awesome pictures of Zack's crotch and the cutting board!

LenaHanson LOL!!! Actually, I believe he does have a girlfriend. He was talking about her in past tense, but we met her the next day!
