Lawson Station opens in Hawaii!

Onigiri, oden, omiyage and more: The famous Japanese convenience store has opened their first conbini in the U.S.

With Lawson General Manager Ray Toshinaga

Japanophiles around Hawaii let out a collective squeal of “OMG, that’s my favorite!” as the first Lawson Station opened in the United States today, right here in Hawaii. The famous convenience store (also known as conbini) opened not one, but two stores — one in the Sheraton Waikiki, and one in the Moana Surfrider.

If you’re not familiar with such Japanese convenience stores, this is a pretty good introduction. When we went to Fukuoka in April, Catherine Toth and I went crazy for these, which seemed to be on every corner. They feature a variety of cheap, quick snacks and bentos, all at fairly good quality. In fact, Lawson is one of chef David Chang’s favorite places to eat in Japan.

For those of you who are familiar with the chain, be warned: It’s not exactly like the Lawson you know and love. Yes, they have their famous onigiri and oden, a selection of quick Japanese snacks, and Japanese toiletries, but it’s really designed to be convenient for Japanese tourists. There is a mix of American snacks and drinks, and — most important for the visitors — souvenirs and products from Hawaii.

That’s not to say you won’t find a good variety of unique items. Here’s a close up of some of the Japanese products we saw today at the Sheraton Waikiki. (And no, I’m sorry, there are no Kit Kats here.)

Here's a massacred salmon musubi/nigiri. It looks kind of measly, but it is actually quite tasty. Although it's a bit more than 7-Eleven, we think it's good for the price and convenience.

As mentioned, there are American products mixed in. Here are just a few of the domestic products you will see in Lawson:

They have Maui chips and chocolate covered mac nuts, like you would find at ABC Stores.

this is very interesting to me, since I do work at a Japan (for Hawaii branches)/Texas (for the U.S. mainland branches)-based convenience chain store (not Fast Stop, Aloha Mini Mart, Tesoro Mart), 7-Eleven.

Melissa, we found a couple of 100 yen Lawson stores. One in Fukuoka and one in Tokyo.

You know, we just so happened to be staying at the Sheraton Waikiki this weekend. This morning, I saw the crowd waiting outside the store, I guess right before they opened the doors, but I had no clue why. Then, when we got back from the zoo, there was someone dressed as some character standing outside. I took a picture but I still had no clue what this place was till I saw this article. Maybe I'll have to stop in before we leave tomorrow.

@Melissa808 No we haven't met IRL, although I did see you around at Eat The Street. When I finally met Mari, you weren't at the tent.
