I want a Bit of Sugar!

Deco sweets have been a big trend for a while now, both here and in Japan. Now you can have your cake and wear it, too

Have you seen the blinged-out iKandy cupcake pendant that I always wear? I would wear it even if it wasn’t in fashion, but deco sweets have been a big trend for a while now, both here and in Japan.

Now, I’ve always kind of known that my twitter friend Brad Tada dabbled in making jewelry, but I thought it was a little strange for him. If you know him, he just doesn’t seem like the jewelry making … type. So I was even more surprised when he, um, busted out of the closet with his company, Bit of Sugar, and posted all his jewelry and Christmas decorations on Facebook.

Turns out, his girlfriend Lei Matsuura (below) is also part of this venture, so I’m a little less shocked.

Also, Chef Isaac Bancaco of the Grand Wailea put my mind at ease, explaining that a lot of fishermen make fishing lures using the same materials, in the same way you would make jewelry. Bit of Sugar charms are handmade using various types of clays, resins, plastics, crystals, etc.

“Our best-selling shave ice necklace uses a mix of local, Asian, and European materials, and it takes two days to make one completed piece,” Tada explained. “Despite the time, labor, and materials it takes to make just one item, we strive to keep our prices affordable.”

Bridal customers can also create custom-ordered miniature versions of their wedding cake.  Cakes can be used as party favors, place card holders, picture/note holders, hanging ornaments, and more. Cakes range from $8 to $20 per piece depending on the complexity of the design, materials used, and quantity ordered.

Here are some of their pieces:

I just want to do do justice here. Lei is the true artist behind all the creations. She makes all the charms and leads the direction in the creativity of Bit of Sugar. To put it simply, she is amazing!

Hmmm, I might wear that, but it all looks too nice to eat. Or it could be that I'm on a butterfat/sugar high since I just ate Graeter's choco blitz ice cream (a seasonal specialty here in O H <3 I O).

Everything from the name of their company to the items they sell and their website are all fabulous!!! D and I took a look at all the items that they sell and was wowed by all the hard work and time it takes to make those little itty bitty details on each item. And I hear business for them is booming, I'm so happy for both of them!!

Melissa808 268 pts

spldrttngrl I didn't know until after I posted this, how much work goes into making it. Brad made it sound so easy! Well, relatively easy.

Take talent to work with miniatures. If tadasauce wore a mask and cape he would look like a superhero. =)

the gummy bear bracelet is the one that got my attention. i think that item alone could could sweep thru every high school from Oakland to Beverly Hills.

gummy bears are so iconic. the first time i saw them was when my brother returned from Germany with a Lufthansa bag full in 1962. i guess with resins the wearable bears can be visually indistinguishable from the gummy ones.

Melissa808 268 pts

turkfontaine off topic, but have you noticed that gummy bears are sadly no longer as soft as they used to be? That's how I got into them.

dkMOMUS 8 pts

Melissa808 turkfontaine real gummi bears aren't supposed to be soft. german gummi bears are firm and chewy; it's how you distinguish between the originals and the relatively-new asian types.

Melissa808 268 pts

dkMOMUS turkfontaine oooh I did not know that! The soft ones were the first ones I ever ate, though. I don't remember where they were from.
