Hawaii: In Real Life ~ The AlohaBus

The AlohaBus is a new transportation option for taking in the Honolulu City Lights

By Melissa Chang on December 6, 2011

That time of year has rolled around again: Christmas lights are illuminating the city, and people from all over the island are flocking to metro Honolulu to take it all in.

One of the easiest ways to see everything is on the AlohaBus, which is the newest means of transportation to the lights. The double-decker, hop-on/hop-off bus started running in April, and began their holiday lights service on Sunday. We rode it last night and I must say, it makes a big difference to be looking at the world below from the top of the bus.

We got to talk to Margie Lehman of the AlohaBus as we headed toward the city lights to talk about this bus ride — hours, price, route, and more — so you can try it as an activity this holiday season. They’ve even got this cool earbud system that literally takes you on a tour using GPS prompts.

Here are some photos from our ride to the City Lights. We talked to Margie a little more to find out about the other tours that Polynesian Adventures offers … which, by the way, are not just for tourists! They offer kamaaiana rates and have a variety of bus packages so you can play tourist in your own city. Click here to see what we talked about on HawaiiIRL.com.

looks like fun, but not as much fun as the Polynesian Hazmat Adventure. the tour starts at the Ilikai Marina and ends at the dumpster behind the 7-11 at Farrington and Makaha Vailey Rd. at 3am. you meet the nicest people there, looking up and down the street, as if waiting for someone. just steps from the beach, where syringes crunch beneath your slippers, the sound of waves breaking on the reef in the distance beckon

I love the idea of viewing Honolulu City lights from the top of the Aloha Bus. I'm kind of excited about taking my son since we always view City lights together. A whole new experience
