Discovering Megs Drive In

We visited this institution in Kalihi for some classic, old-school local grinds

By Melissa Chang on April 7, 2011

Megs Drive In has been serving up old-school local favorites in Kalihi since 1967. For people who grew up or live in the area, Megs is an institution that also serves up generations of memories. Yet, for those of us who have never been there, the spot is virtually unknown.

A bit of trivia: Do you know who the drive-in is named after? And why did they leave the apostrophe in “Megs” off the sign? I’ll tell you. Click the photos below to find out.

Our Twitter friend Rick Nakama suggested we go to Megs (note: Rick did not pay for our meal — if he could do that, he'd be driving a better car) to see what it was all about. His grandfather started the business, so he knew it well.

As you can see, there's an extensive menu, plus a list of specials that change daily. You can opt to sit inside or on the benches outside.

As far as I can remember, the OG's across the street created the fries with gravy. My personal favorite is half beef stew half beef curry hawaaian style with fries instead of rice & mac salad. Then put choke pepper all over. Large lemon lime with 7up (now known as green river & sprite).

Melissa808 204 pts

Nippondamic no pepper for me!

I am sooooo glad you checked this place out. I drive by it every now and then and I always wondered if it was any good. That and the fact that it is kinda in a seedy area to me. I'm actually surprised you folks went at night. Yikes! Although, after seeing that beef stew plate... I'm gonna have to risk it. I'll just park on the street and keep one eye open for any trouble.

BTW - the straw is also an important component to a good green river (or any drive in drink I guess). The straw should be firm and not limp. Length is nice especially if the cup is a big one, but girth is the key component to a really good straw and enjoying the drink.

Melissa808 204 pts

ParkRat firm and girth. got it.

Ynaku 78 pts

Melissa808 RickNakama ParkRat Soft and Limp????? bwahahahaha

Ynaku 78 pts

Melissa808 204 pts

@Ynaku LOL this is true, an award is an award! OK so....what is it like to have gravy over fries instead of ketchup?

ParkRat 20 pts

Melissa808 Ynaku You can get gravy fries at Grace's too!

Ynaku 78 pts

ParkRat Melissa808 I like mushroom gravy with pieces of mushroom. Better than Chili Cheese fires...Well maybe not. Think gravy complement or condiment

RickNakama 14 pts

Melissa808 Ynaku You saw Fries with Gravy on the menu? Hahaha. I think another off menu request would be fries with garlic salt, but that's not so different. Another way I used to have my fries is with Chili Seasoning. And then, there are those that order the fries "half cooked" because they like it soft and limp. Uh oh... I said it...

Melissa808 204 pts

RickNakama Ynaku but not flaccid!
