Autumn harvest dinner at Roy’s

I went to my first wine dinner at Roy’s Hawaii Kai last night, a nice way to celebrate the harvest moon

By Melissa Chang on September 28, 2010

Every so often, Roy’s in Hawaii Kai will have special wine dinners to showcase a specific winemaker, and then will pair foods around the featured wines. Last night, the restaurant had a wine dinner with a different theme: An autumn harvest menu paired with Roy’s private label wines.

This was my first time to one of their wine dinners, and I was a little intimidated, since I don’t know my way around wines. I mean, I drink wine and know the basics, and I know what I like. But beyond that, I couldn’t give you recommendations on pairings like real oenophiles. As it turned out, many of the people who came were like me, so we could just sit back and enjoy the meal without thinking too hard. Here’s what we had:

We started the evening with a glass of Roy's prosecco. Always a good start!

65 bucks? that's lower than a corkage fee at places that can't hold a candle to Roy's. Wine can be intimidating. allow me to pass on my own knowledge, gleaned from many dinners at Mille Fleurs under the tutelage of that excellent establishment's Master Sommelier. i approach him with respect befitting his station and say: Hey, Marcel, would grab a glass and sit in here with us? cause, i don't know what the fuck i'm doing.

I am drooling again. And I'm not that OLD yet :)

As for wine, I wouldn't know what to drink with what. All I know is white for seafood and red for beef. For me as long as it tastes good. But I can't take dry wine. I like to feel what I'm drinking.

As for the Wild Pork, you can tell what they eat. That's the reason I prefer pigs caught in the macnut fields as opposed to the mountain pigs that eat hapuu.

How was that Mountain Apple sorbet?

Melissa808 204 pts

Ynaku I'm the same way, white for seafood and red for beef! And I'm not a big fan of dryer wines, usually. I guess depends if they can pair um really well, I'd enjoy them.

The mountain apple sorbet was winnahs!!

Wine Gurl:
WOW! Thanks for the Fuud and Wine pix! Like "green bean" noted, did the rabbit taste like "chikin"? On balance, were most of the wines complimentary or complementary to the dishes? Because of the selection (Roy's private label), I presume most of the reds were young...or were there any "old" reds? Hopefully, you "ate the whole thing"!!! Guud job!

Melissa808 204 pts

Annoddah_Dave Tate Lai Chicken!! Tate Lai Chicken! And yes, the wines were complementary. Oops, did I spell wrong? It was 2 am when I posted! No old reds.

"People who couldn't eat rabbit...". Nice way to say people that don't want to eat rabbit. It tastes just like Chicken, sans skin.

PORK, the other white meat! That dish looks ono! What was the glaze on the Pork Chop and what was the accompanying sauce?

Fuud prom again, I mean porn.

Melissa808 204 pts

harrycovair hahaha Note, I didn't mention names of the picky people. OK, picky person. Jason Kim.

I gotta be honest, since it wasn't my dish, I didn't pay attention to all the stuff that was on the pork. BUT....it was so good that we wanted more than one bite!

Hello Melissa,

I don't drink so that's not a problem. I just love to eat.
