Aloha Sapporo! Day 1

Our first day on Hawaiian Airlines’ inaugural flight to Sapporo, and the first few hours there

Posted October 31, 2012 by Melissa Chang

It’s been quite a long day, with 10 hours of flying, a long bus ride in, then a two-hour party followed by ramen. But we made it to Sapporo, located on Japan’s northernmost island, to see what Hawaiian Airlines’ newest destination has in store.

Sapporo is Japan’s fifth largest city, and despite having many of the same business and industrial structures of large metropolitan areas, the place has a vibe that (so far) is similar to more laid-back destinations like San Francisco or even Paris. We’re going to catch a train out to Otaru tomorrow and see what else we can discover. But for now, here’s how our first day on the go went:

Aloha Sapporo! Day 1 (1 of 30)

Aloha Sapporo! Day 1

The hula dancers that performed at Gate 34, making the atmosphere festive (at 8 a.m. no less!).

Those were just the highlights. If you’d like to see the rest of my photos from this day, click here!

I know people are still left wondering what Japanese hotel rooms look like, even after seeing their photos online. Here’s a video to walk you through my room at the Sapporo Grand Hotel to give you better perspective of the size. Not bad. We are also across from Lawsons, so we’ve already filled our in-room refrigerators with Japanese coffees and vitamin drinks!

I can already see where this trip is going. I hope I can fit in my pants when we return next week. It’s just Day 1 and we’re already discovering the delicious food Hokkaido has to offer. Later this morning we’ll get our first look at the sights.

Melissa, I heard of Damaru Buffet in Sappora and it funny how the chef would ring a bell when a new dish come of the kitchen to inform customers get it while it hot.

Sapporo is known to have many restaurants that serve curries soups.  People in Sapporo love curries so very much.
