Aloha Fukuoka: Day one

We’ve arrived in Fukuoka. After the initial festivities, what do we do first? Hit up the city’s famous yatai, of course, and spread our aloha

This is actually two blogs in one, having crossed the International Date Line and traveling forward in time (sort of). I’m going to breeze through the first two events, below, but our adventure really begins in the third gallery. So I hope you’ll scroll down and see what our first taste of Fukuoka was like.

Since this was Hawaiian Air’s inaugural flight to Fukuoka, now flying direct daily, the scene at the gate was a very big deal. There was entertainment, speeches, a blessing, and a neat mix of people. Apparently there were paid passengers on the flight, as well as people who were invited, like Cat Toth, Chuck Furuya, Gov. George and Mrs. Ariyoshi, Manoa DNA, Pali Kaaihue, and me.

Aloha Fukuoka! Day 1

We had a nice little reception at the Hawaiian Airlines departing gate. Hula, musicians, the works!

Ten hours was quite a long time to be on an airplane. We were so happy to disembark and get going! Once we arrived, Cat and I had to make a mad dash to find our hotel, since we are staying at a different hotel from the rest of the group. We needed to check in and get to the Hotel Okura in time for the big gala event.

Aloha Fukuoka! Day 1

So Pali and I did!

Many people on the inaugural flight were only on it for one day, so people like Cyrus Tamashiro had a long and specific list of items they needed to eat before leaving. Of course, we were more than happy to tag along and help in their quest. First stop? Fukuoka’s famous yatai, of course.

Aloha Fukuoka! Day 1: Itadakimasu! (1 of 22)

Aloha Fukuoka! Day 1: Itadakimasu!

One thing you must do in Fukuoka is try a yatai stand. These are little makeshift booths that pop up every night from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. They're all over the city, but you want to find Nagahama, a street with about 10 yatai. We browsed and ended up at Mangetsu.

I’m actually supposed to have a couple of videos to go with this blog, but the connectivity hasn’t been the best on my wifi, so I’ll have to try again tomorrow.

Next up: touring Yanagawa and the Zaifu shrine … and more eating!

the Yatai remind me of the fish camps i've been to in South Carolina and Georgia. bare minimum structure, jam packed with locals. if you don't know where they are already, you can't find them. every country, every culture has got little places where people sit around and eat and drink and talk and it's not about turnover and revenue per seat and all the other stuff that goes with the business of food instead of the sharing of it.

Asian poses? there must be a photo book of them somewhere. probably someone over on the 'Engrish' website has got a line on that.

seeing these pix makes me remember my time in Japan. i was much younger, even than you are now. my motto then was; 'don't ask, just eat it'. i did and i was never sorry.

Melissa, my folks, who traveled to Fukuoka, say it's hard to get into the yatai because all the regulars camp out there.  How did you guys all get in?

As usual, you (& Cat) are doing the best food porn in the biz!

 KAN timing was just right!

I can't believe you guys boarded a 10 hour flight without a ZipPac or some other sort of bento... Never depend on the airlines. Plus, even if you are in 1st Class and they have something great to eat, you can always bestow your precious ZipPac on some local kid back in coach and make his/her day.

townieUHfan Cat actually made some spam musubis. We were planning to sleep more anyway!

nonstopmari Thanks! We were actually super tired...like, painfully tired. There was no way I could post anything that first day. Sorry I'm one day behind!

nonstopmari 245 pts moderator

Wine Gurl:  thanks for sharing...luuks like fuun with all the guud fuud!  Say, what do waitresses at a Chinese Buffet look like?  Did you have to ask for the bathroom key at the yatai stand?

Melissa808 268 pts moderator

Annoddah_Dave We made sure we used the bathroom before we left the hotel!
