A taste of Hawaii in Vegas

If you’re craving ‘ono local grinds in Las Vegas, check out Island Sushi & Grill and Elena’s Restaurant to get your fix

From left, Corey Asato from Waipahu and Hekili Apao from Hilo run Island Sushi's plate lunch truck. Their schedule is posted at http://www.islandbreezelv.com.

Let’s face it, despite all the good food and world-class restaurants in Las Vegas, Hawaii people love to eat food from home when they’re on the Ninth Island. It doesn’t matter if they’re only there for the weekend or for two weeks; they want their spam, poke, sticky rice, saimin, guisantes, and whatever else local grindage they left in Hawaii. Why do you think the California and Main Street hotels are so popular? Hawaii people who stay on the strip often drive out of their way to get some oxtail soup downtown, and some people who stay in the Boyd hotels never leave the property. They just want to feel like they’re at home.

Well, if you are one of these people but are feeling a little adventurous, I have a couple of places you can drive to in Las Vegas that will give you a super garanz, brok-da-mout taste of Hawaii.

One of my favorites, which I visited last year, is Island Sushi & Grill in Henderson. I returned with Traci Toguchi (who is a Kaiser grad like owner Terance Fong) and Ed Morita.

Island Sushi & Grill

A lot of Hawaii locals drive 20 miles out to Henderson/Green Valley just to eat at Island Sushi & Grill — and I think I've become one of them. You can't get such fresh poke, sushi, and other local-style food like this anywhere in Vegas. And for the price, I'll be so bold as to say you can't even get this kind of food and value at home. I drove out to see what was new with Terance Fong (second from left), who oversees the sushi, and Royden Oshita (far right), who oversees the grill. They're pictured here with Mila Reyes and Jesus Chuy, who turn out some of the best Hawaii-style food right here in the middle of the desert.

My new favorite for local food in Las Vegas is Elena’s Restaurant, which is closer to the Strip and a fairly easy drive from downtown. The original restaurant is still in Waipahu, but since Theo and Elena Butuyan retired to Las Vegas, their daughter Mellissa opened a spot there, too.

Elena's Restaurant

It's a large restaurant in a strip mall, and you can order at the counter for take out, dine in, or opt for their mini-buffet (Saturday and Sunday only). We opted to dine in, but I'll show you some of the items on the buffet line later.

Disclaimer: Air & hotel were provided by Boyd Vacations Hawaiifor an assignment for InsideOut Hawaii.

There's that chocolate meat again! Maybe they can serve some at Max Brenner's LOL. Good to see the local eats up in Vegas, must try Elena's down here sometime. I have to admit it is kinda comforting to have foods like oxtail soup and saimin available while in Sin City, especially when you're up real late!

*drool*...I can't believe how good the poke and sushi look? In the middle of the desert? Where do these people get their fresh fish? I seriously want to take a plane up there right now just to go eat all you can eat sushi, poke, and hamachi kama. This post is making me crazy J. BTW, will definitely have to eat at Elena's in Vegas when I start getting sick of all the rich foods and crave my local flavors. This is my kinda Vegas!!!

MoOgooGuypAN That's exactly how I felt! It was good to get some local flavors in, after all the rich foods & stuff. But I forgot to mention that at $20.99, the Island Sushi all-you-can-eat is actually an even better deal than Kats Sushi. Remember that deal? It was only sushi. Here, you get all kine, even amaebi, uni, and ikura; PLUS all the grilled and fried dishes. I sat there kind of dumbfounded when I realized the cost/value compared to Kats.

Melissa808 MoOgooGuypAN oooooo...Kats! Yah, forgot about them. Now that you mention it, I might get my sushi fix there for now. Looks like you got someplace else to go and blog about. Wouldn't mind finding out how they are today.

MoOgooGuypAN Last time I was at Kats (and this was after he moved away, so kinda long ago), it had gone very downhill so I didn't bother to go back. Maybe it's worth a look....like VH-1's "Where are they now?"

Hah... hah... I know folks living up Centennial Hills, an area that's closer to Red Rock than anything else, that will drive to Henderson to pick up Poke. Never visited that place myself as I'll just pop upstairs to the 2nd floor of The Cal to satisfy a quick craving of local style food if I need it. For some reason I'm craving Sushi right now. Must resist... temptation winning...

As for ethnic food I'll definitely go for a Mexican (Lindo Michoacan) and Schezuan (Yu Nan Garden) when I'm in LAS. Good to know that Elena's has an outlet in LAS now.

harrycovair I heard about Lindo Michoacan from Scotty808 halfway thru my trip, but I gotta save it for next time, I guess. too many places!
