FUUD: Mama Woo’s Bar-B-Q in Moiliili

Mama Woo’s Bar-B-Q re-opened in Moiliili two weeks ago and we couldn’t wait to try it

Hawaii Kai residents may remember Mama Woo’s Bar-B-Q, a reliable Korean takeout spot that opened in 2003.

When the eatery moved to Kaneohe a few years later, loyal customers followed, some making the trek from East Honolulu to the Windward side just for Mama’s authentic Korean food at affordable prices.

But the family who runs the restaurant lost the lease and — to the benefit of Honolulu urbanites — moved to Moiliili next to McCully Bicycle & Sporting Goods.
It re-opened two weeks ago — at the end of August — and we couldn’t wait to try it.

Here’s what we ate:

Mandoo (18 of 18)

Mandoo

I've never had a bad mandoo, and this was no exception. To me, these Korean dumplings, which can be fried or grilled, are a lot like gyoza — the perfect pupu.

Mama Woo’s Bar-B-Q, 2080 S. King St., #101. Hours: 10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. (808) 941-6262.

that's a great location. high traffic, hungry bikers, and the f2c glass makes the interior attractive.

trying to calibrate taste buds: what do u think of the meat jun at millions? have u tried? wondering which u think is better.

nonstopmari OHHH NO... are we getting into the "best meat jun in Hawaii" debate!? Because Tommy has alot to say about that one! We know Cat likes Youngs, but Tommy things Choi's Family Restaurant has the best meat jun along with Dong Yang in Wahiawa. What's your take?

nonstopmari 246 pts

johngarcia Tommy Cat yikes. well i never met a meat jun i liked -- until i met millions. then i fantasized abt it til the next day, when i had to go back for more. it was fantastically eggy, the meat well-marinated, didn't need sauce. in other words, millions changed my life but my meat jun exposure is still too limited for a worthy opinion. ideferideferidefer

nonstopmari johngarcia Tommy Cat I also like the meat jun at Obok in Manoa Marketplace. Dong Yang is the bomb, too.

johngarcia If by Young's you mean Young's Kal Bee in Aiea, then I definitely agree with Cat on that, their meat jun is VERY good.

Thanks for reminding me to try Mama Woo's. It's my friend's Mom's place. I had the spicy squid today. Delicious! Tried the eggplant side, too. Something different and tasty. I'll definitely be back!

Yay! Another great place to eat nearby!

Mmm I definitely want to try that fried eggplant, looks unique to their place. The kimchi pancakes are a must try as well as it's not too common in take out places, at least not on a consistent basis. I think Yummy's/Pearl's was the last place I had them at. Looks like they don't have taegu but no biggie since that's not a side in many take outs either.

On Oahu we are very lucky to have so many Korean BBQ take-out places to choose from. I think virtually every part of the island has one somewhere nearby. So now that they moved into town I'll have to stop by Mama Woo's during lunch one day to see how it stacks up against the others!

808marv I thought it was interesting that the fried eggplant was so popular. I mean, it's good, don't get me wrong, but I've never seen it on any other Korean takeout menu. Great pupu potluck idea!

I'm a sucker for Korean takeout. I think I could eat meat jun every day.

Love the pics. Now I have a choice. If Yamagen is busy then I'll just walk over to Mama Woo's. Could go across the street also for Thai or Mexican. The Ox Tail Soup will be a must try for me.

Never had oxtail soup at a take-out Korean place before. Gonna try it.

Hello Cat!

Yummy Korean fuud! next stop, Mama Woo's BBQ!

Gonna try that place when I get back there... fuud looks good. It is hard to mess up dumplings, who doesn't like garlic, ginger, and pork cooked together with some scallions and whatever the cook likes to slap together. Notice the prices are higher than before but Oahu landlords love to calculate or look at your profit, multiply by .9 to arrive at the rent :) Some restaurant owners are probably thinking '.9 ... shoots braddah paying 1.2 now....'

Kim chee pancakes? Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah...! No T'anks.
The rest of the fuud pix luuked yummy!
