FUUD: Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop

This Kailua bakery might just serve the best malassadas on the island

By Catherine E. Toth on April 15, 2011

The last thing I want to think about today is taxes.

I know the Internal Revenue Service has issued an extension, so technically taxes aren’t due until Monday.

Still, April 15 sends electric shock down my spine.

So I’ve decided, just for today, I’m going to talk about two of my favorite things: malassadas and vinha d’alhos — both from Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop in Kailua.

Here’s what we ate:

Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop (1 of 9)

Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop

This bakery in Kailua specializes in European breads, rolls and desserts, particularly of the Portuguese variety. It's best known for its hot and fresh malassadas.

Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop, 46 Hoolai St. in Kailua. Hours: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, closed Monday. Phone: (808) 262-5367.

As long as there's no BUSLOADS of tourists hitting the store, Agnes' will be a hit on the Windward side.

Arguably I still prefer Champion's Malasada's in town. I might just cross the Pali just to sample Agnes' again.

Agnes' is where I used to get a dozen & a half of the malasadas and some other pastries every Thursday when I made business visits to the HC&D quarry. It started with the original smaller bakery and the original owner. Needless to say, I got to know Nan and his early morning workers quite well. I made sure that my replacement salesman continue the tradition when he called on the quarry. Gee, that's been almost 15 years ago. Gotta make it a point to get over to Kailua and try the Vinha d'alhos. I've had Koa's and liked it, but as 808marv mentioned a bit on the dry side.

Nice place. I still remember ordering vinha d'alhos for the first time at Koa Pancake House and totally mangling the pronunciation lol. Got quickly corrected by the lady at the counter of course. That one looks more tender, the one I got was like dry kalua pig unfortunately. Guess I can go to Agnes' to give it a second chance.

808marv koa's also where i first had vinha d'alhos. that was vinegary, trying to imagine agnes' more vinegary.
