Cat Chat 25: Everything fried

The phrase on the food truck said it all: “Everything tastes better fried.”

By Catherine E. Toth on July 20, 2011

The phrase on the food truck said it all:

“Everything tastes better fried.”

That was enough to lure me to the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard to check out Hawaii’s Fried Musubi (@friedmusubiHI), a new food truck run by a mother-and-daughter team that boasts a menu of fried goodness.

Julia Vuong, or Mama, who has more than 30 years of culinary experience, runs the kitchen. Her daughter, Sophia, brings the innovation. Together — and with assistance from brother Alan — they have devise a fairly simple menu of complicated proportions.

Consider this: There are three versions of a fried musubi — Da Classic Spam Musubi, Hawaiian Styled Ahi Musubi and the Spicy “Bomb” Musubi, all paired with your choice of pesto or wasabi aioli. Then there are the daily specials, which often includes one of the best pork spring rolls around. And finally — and to use, the showcase item — Mama’s Home Made Fried Chicken. Easily, this is the best fried chicken I’ve had, possibly ever.

But that’s not it. Hawaii’s Fried Musubi also serves up dessert — fried dessert. We’re talking deep-fried Oreos, cupcakes and Twinkies.

It opened this week to rave reviews, long lines and a sell-out on its first day.

Here’s a peek at this new food truck sure to be a hit:

Here’s a quickie review of the eats from Hawaii’s Fried Musubi by Nonstop’s Diane Seo:

Hawaii's Fried Musubi

Yet another intriguing food truck has rolled into Honolulu, this time with fried musubi, fried chicken, spring rolls and even a fried Twinkie on the menu. The colorful, hip truck opened Monday for business and sold out in an hour and a half — definitely promising for a truck relying on word of mouth and social networking to generate buzz.

Hawaii's Fried Musubi
Parked in a Ward Avenue lot, just mauka of Kapiolani Boulevard from Tuesday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until the food runs out.

CAT: Aaaiiiyyyaaahhh! Fuud Vid! Tenks! Say isn't Fried Musubi really fried rice?

DianeSeo 91 pts

Annoddah_Dave Think the big difference is the fried musubi is deep fried, so a little different from fried rice.

DianeSeo As you know, DS, I was being a bit facetious. The simplistic logic of musubi=rice, therefore, fried musubi=fried rice. But you are correct that deep frying method does make a difference as opposed to stir frying.

i never eat fried chicken, and now i must.

i wonder who would win in a fight between those little musubi guys on the truck and mr. mandoo?

im glad there are more and more trucks in Honolulu. i like to eat casually, probably because for most of my student life and between marriages i ate over the kitchen sink.

turkfontaine i'd put my money on mr mandoo. he has skinny little legs and can run circles ard fried musubi. otoh, fried musubi are built like sumo wrestlers, so if they ever caught mr mandoo, they wd roll over him.

Mmmmm, fried chicken. If they're selling out that quickly, what time do you guys recommend going?

DianeSeo 91 pts

chant808 Probably earlier the better, maybe 11ish.

Dang it I missed an opportunity to try this last week at the sneak preview. I did hear the magic words Eat The Street in the video though so that's something to look forward to... Gotta try the fried twinkie!

DianeSeo 91 pts

MyongChoi Actually there were elements of Chicken Alice in this chicken, but without the spice.
