Cirque du Soleil ‘Viva Elvis’

Here’s my review on the Elvis-inspired tribute, showing in Las Vegas

Viva Elvis (1 of 17)

Viva Elvis

This week, I paid a visit to the Elvis Theater at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas to check out Cirque du Soleil's latest show, "Viva Elvis."

After the success of "Love," the show inspired by the music of The Beatles, Cirque du Soleil came up with "Viva Elvis," which sounded like a foolproof formula. An icon of old Vegas re-imagined by a world-renowned performance troupe. Leading up the the day of the show, however, I found mixed reviews online, so I was eager to see and judge the show for myself.

thanks for covering this. i was curious. it looks like the show hewed closely to the original set and choreography on the the Jail House Rock number. don't think anyone could ever improve on that. it's the Hope Diamond of Elvis's career.

it was interesting to me that a very big production number was staged around Elvis's twin who died in childbirth. about twenty years ago i saw a play about Elvis in which his brother was a presence on stage. the actor was in white, lit in white on a set of grey. the audio was distorted and his movement slowed and studied. the only character who could see him and speak with him was Elvis. it was very much like a Greek play in that respect. during these scenes, Elvis sorrows for his mother's loss of her child and his loss of a brother, but he is also haunted -literally- by the dread that his dead brother was the greater of them, and those fears are fed by the brother's tauting that they are, in fact true.
