You + Livefyre = Awesome

I wanted to take a minute to introduce you to our friends over at Livefyre. What stemmed as a suggestion from my buddy Eric Nakagawa has, relatively quickly, become an important part of how we want to communicate with you.

Awesome? Yes. Awesome.

I wanted to take a minute to introduce you to our friends over at Livefyre. What stemmed as a suggestion from my buddy Eric Nakagawa, has become an important part of how we want to communicate with you.

If you’re wondering what Livefyre is, here’s a bit about Livefyre from the guys at CrunchBase:

Livefyre is an embeddable live commenting and conversation platform that replaces your legacy commenting system. We’re rethinking how conversations across the entire web work by building a system that makes every conversation online aware of every other conversation’s existence. This allows conversations around the web to share data, and creates a massive central pipeline of high quality conversation and commentary. Even better, we’re doing it all in real-time, which means instantaneous comment posts, lighting fast search of conversations happening around the web, and a powerful recommendation engine that drives traffic to your site’s content simply based on the topics you post about.

In addition to shifting the thinking about how conversations happen online in general, Livefyre is introducing a number of firsts into the conversation ecosystem, including conversation check-ins, real-time game mechanics, and a revolutionary moderation and reputation system.

We’re hoping that Livefyre will change the way you interact with our content. Hold live conversations with the nonstop crew, connect with fellow blog lurkers, ask questions, give props and build your online rep. We think it has promise.

Livefyre is currently in private beta, meaning there’s lots of testing, tweaking and re-shuffling of features, but it also means that we’re one of the lucky few who have the chance to utilize a tool early in the game.

We know there’s been some hiccups over the past couple days, but rest assured, JKretch and the Livefyre crew will make commenting a happy place once again. We want to hear from you! Are you a commenter? Are you a lurker? Do you prefer simple commenting or threaded discussions? Does design and user interface have anything to do with how you comment? Let’s get a Livefyre conversation going!

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or if you’re having any trouble and CAN’T comment, shoot me an e-mail at john at nonstophonolulu.com or send us a contact message and I’d be happy to help you out.

Follow @JKretch and @Livefyre on twitter and visit them online at http://livefyre.com

Update: 3:08 p.m. Hawai’i time – A note from LiveFyre CEO Jordan Kretchmer:

We will be temporarily replacing the live comment stream with one that doesn’t stream live comments into the page. It will work exactly as a standard comment system does, but social network logins, as well as profiles will still be active. Although it won’t update live, people will always be able to post, and we feel that is most important. As soon as we’ve permanently stabilized the live comment stream, we’ll turn it back on. We will be making this switch within the hour.

Comment performance seems to have greatly inceased and it looks like we’re back up and running! Props to the Livefyre team!

johngarcia I wanted to thank you for introducing me to the awesomeness of livefyre . They were impressed that I was singing them praises before they became the sponsor of BlogcastFM. After hanging out with jennalanger jkretch and the rest of the gang, they can't stop singing praises to you and NonStop. They go beyond a service and are a true partner.

capsunlivefyre Awesome, Capsun! We go way back with LiveFyre! :)

Also jkretch - I noticed that when you type an@reply to someone with only one space, it tends to eat the space before it when converting to a link.

For instance: this is an@reply with one space before the at. this is an @reply with two spaces before the at.

johngarcia jkretch Thanks John, this one's on the list and we'll be taking care of it soon. Luckily it still links the the right profile :) I'll look in to the issue with the hyphen as well. -

jennalanger 665 pts

johngarcia oops sorry mean, dash - does that mean an underscore? _

johngarcia 170 pts

I meant to comment on this a couple days ago, but also, as confirmed by Andreas, if you use a "dash" (not hyphen) in your comment, Livefyre doesn't seem to like it and it will cause the system to hang. I just confirmed this, so if you're trying to post, and it doesnt go through, make sure you don't have any dashes in your post until this issue is resolved. Mahalo!

I'm really enjoying the system, it's been flawless on my end (Firefox browser, running on both Mac and PC)... hope @madmarv's issues get resolved. It's so dynamic!

jennalanger 665 pts

strobie That's what we love to hear :) Looks like @madmarv's issue was resolved, happy it's running smoothly for you!

johngarcia 170 pts

strobie Thanks for the words of encouragement! :) I was having issues myself this afternoon, which seemed to be tied to cached copies of older code that has since been replaced with a stable build. I've been feeling consipated over the past couple days when not being able to post. It's flowing now! :) haha!

johngarcia In my mind, this Livefyre commenting system has grown from pretty good to downright outstanding. Very good choice! As I told you earlier, I never had a problem with it but my wife had an initial hiccup that went away.

jkretch Even if your product was flawed, which it definitely is not, I would support you just because you're here in this conversation, actively and promptly posting responses to everybody's questions and concerns. That's how it's done.

I've never seen a product quite like this but I've definitely seen a need for it. Magnificent!

Andreas Thanks! Nothing gets us more excited than an active community of people who love to talk. And that's exactly what NSH is. Let me know if you want to give it a try on thea-zfiles. Install is really easy.

jkretch Thanks for the offer to try Livefyre on our blog! Do I need a special account? I'm not quite ready to install it tonight but I'd like to give it a try sometime soon.

Andreas jkretch Dre u00e2u0080u0094 I totally agree with you, Andreas! I think engaging the user, listening and offering solutions are what set good products apart from great products.

jkretch 300 pts

Andreas Just head on over to http://livefyre.com and sign up for the private beta. We'll send you the invite email right after and you can install at your convenience!

Ok, so I'm trying to use your commenting system but I also use NoScript w/ FF 3.6.8. Normally I'll individually choose to allow certain scripts to run when they originate from a site I don't visit very often. The livefyre script, however, keeps regenerating NoScript alerts every few seconds. And because it is originating from separate sub-domains of livefyre.com, each of these NoScript alerts has to be whitelisted. This is unmanageable, the only way I was able to login was to disable NoScript globally.

johngarcia 170 pts

madmarv Great feedback, Marv. Hopefully jkretch or someone from his team can address this directly. Stay tuned!

jkretch 300 pts

madmarv Thanks for the comment. Our live stream uses a randomized sub-domain so that we can make multiple ajax requests to our server from across the web without limitations.

All you have to do is whitelist "livefyre.com" instead of the entire sub-domain, and it will allow Livefyre to load correctly.

jkretch 300 pts

madmarv Check this link out or let us know if you have any other questions or issues with NoScript: http://noscript.net/features#sitematching

ben 107 pts

madmarv If you add livefyre.com to your NoScript whitelist, it should automatically whitelist all subdomains of livefyre.com.

Hope this solves it!

jkretch 300 pts

ben At Livefyre, we take pride in our repetition ;-)

madmarv 10 pts

jkretch I added livefyre.com to the permanent whitelist, but the sub-domains are still tripping NoScript Alerts, see this screen cap http://dl.dropbox.com/u/389184/livefyre-noscript.p.... I'm guessing that these connections are treated differently because they are using port 8999.

jkretch 300 pts

madmarv We're looking into this, and trying to get in touch with the NoScript author at the same time. We'll hopefully have a solve for people using that plugin soon.

ben 107 pts

madmarv jkretch In my whitelist, I have the following and things are working for me. Try it out. Add: "http://*.stream.livefyre.com:8999", "livefyre.com", "nonstophonolulu.com"

madmarv 10 pts

ben jkretch looks like the issue is fixed now, I don't see the NoScript alert from the streaming sub-domain anymore. Thanks.

NonstopHonolulu 8 pts

madmarv We appreciate your patience as we work through these issues. Keep us posted on how things are working in a couple days. Thanks again!

Cool stuff, John -- thanks for the peek behind the curtain! I hadn't heard of Livefyre before, so that was an interesting read. Sounds like it'll be a great tool here.

jkretch 300 pts

ryannamba We hope so! We're excited to hear the feedback from Nonstop readers.

johngarcia 170 pts

ryannamba Thanks for the comment, Ryan! We're pretty happy with it as well. Hope you can visit often and pick up a few nuggets of info, as well as teach me a few things along the way! Looking forward to living the tech-veil and getting direct end-user feedback. Do you have experience with other commenting platforms? Any insight you can share with us would be great!

johngarcia 170 pts

Just spoke to JKretch from Livefyre and they're going to try turning live streaming off for a bit as they work out a few kinks. You'll still be able to comment but they wont roll in live until they turn streaming back on. A quick refresh and comments will appear as they would in a traditional commenting system.

Follow this conversation to hear chatter about this topic and for updates on progress with Livefyre + Nonstop.
