iPhone 4S pre-order experience

If you’re like me, you were sitting in front of your computer waiting for Apple.com to begin taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S

If you’re like me, you were sitting in front of your computer waiting for Apple.com to begin taking pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S. If you were lucky, you got through the process smoothly and received your order confirmation for October 14. Chances are, the process, in true iPhone pre-order fashion, wasn’t very smooth. It’s what happens when a site gets pounded by hundreds of thousands of requests per minute, but I give Apple credit for navigating through the traffic.

I took screenshots of my entire ordering process so you could see what I had to deal with throughout the night. I watched as Apple’s web engineers fixed pages dynamically and flowed traffic from direct pre-orders to a reservation system being handled through iTunes. Here’s how it went down:

Update: As of 12:54 p.m. — Apple.com sent me a confirmation to complete my order. Awesome!

Did you pre-order the iPhone 4S tonight? If so, which model and color did you get? Didn’t upgrade? Tell us why you’re holding out in the comments below.

John:

I have an iphone 3G -- yes, a dinosaur! I've been waiting for the new phone to upgrade, but now that there is a strong possibility of an iphone 5 next spring, I'm thinking of holding out just a few months longer and getting that instead of the 4S now. Do you think it's worth waiting for, or shall I just go ahead and get the 4S since my phone is so old already?

I saw you guys tweeting your experiences and tried too, but I was unsuccessful. So I waited and got back on to the Apple Store at about 1 am. Had no problems then. This will be a huge upgrade for us since we still had the 3g. Looking forward to it's arrival! Aloha!

I am seriously interested in getting the new iPhone on Sprint, but the one thing I have learned about Apple products is that out the gate there is ALWAYS going to be some problems - considering that it's new to Sprint, I imagine the problems will be quite a bit more than the usual. I think waiting a couple months is best.

NikkiJohnson thanks for your comment, Nikki! Good point! It'll be interesting to see how smooth the transition process it from carrier to carrier. Hopefully soon, iPhone will work on all carriers!

I was going to get the 4s but there was nothing that intrest me. Ive had my 3G for a long time, and I decided to go the Android route and get the Galaxy S2. I'll use this phone until the next phone comes out and hopefully it will lure me back in.

ChrisBlaze what were you looking for? I'm curious.

ChrisBlaze Thanks for the comment, Chris! Wow — anything you upgrade to will a huge upgrade from the original 3G. I thought 4 was a necessary upgrade, 4S is a no brainer for me.

I use my iPhone for blogging, photos, video and social media heavily, and it's been an integral part of my workflow. Keep us posted on which direction you decide to head in!

johngarciaChrisBlaze Yeah the camera alone makes it a no brainer. Many phones had 8MP but with crummy lenses and software. The iP4S will be amazing once the crazy third-party software like http://campl.us/ from @taptaptap get upgraded for it

Ordered!!! White iPhone 64Gb. They allowed me to grandfather in my unlimited data plan as well...

MarkMizuno This is good news many people were worried about this. I have UL plan but even has a hardcore user I rarely get past 1.5GB of data. It's just one of those hoarding please don't take aways what I used to have things. Most people don't need more that 2GB. I too will keep my UL but add hotspot for $35 cc: jeromekoehler

MarkMizuno I kept my unlimited as well because it's just a better deal, regardless of if I use 1mb per month or 1gb. Won't be getting hot spot because most of where I frequent has Wifi and I carry a 4G hotspot with me at all times.

I just ordered the 4S online (around 6 a.m.) and it was glitch-free, except that one of my gift cards wasn't accepted during the payment process. I'm getting it delivered. I now have the 3GS, so this is a big upgrade for me. I waited the two years to qualify for the discount. Looking forward to having Siri, although I'm still wondering how accurate it'll be.

nonstopmariDianeSeo You gotta go 4S, You will be surprised when the 4S photos and either match your current cameras or our pace them in some ways. The first place the iPhone will most pace most p&S cameras will be the instant accessibility to shoot and post. The current cameras ia awesome in good lighting conditions and good composition.

Check out the demo shots http://www.apple.com/iphone/built-in-apps/camera.html. Now imagine the third party camera apps they will only make it better. Also look here http://www.flickr.com/cameras/ to see what people are already doing with the iPhone 4. I'm so excited it will only get better.
