iPad 2: Sold or not?

Take our poll and tell us if you’re down with the new iPad 2

With Apple’s announcement of the iPad 2 this morning, there’s no doubt that current iPad owners have some tough decisions to make.

For those who didn’t already jump on the iPad bandwagon, now would seem to be the best time to do so. With a thinner physical size, faster processing speed and dual cameras built-in, the iPad 2 may be impressive to some, but to others, merely evolutionary.

We want to hear from you! Take our poll and tell us what you think:

Leave your comments and let’s get a discussion going! Are you sold or not? If you’re on the fence, tell us why and we’ll talk you through it.

I'm not much of an Apple fan myself, but Conan had a nice skit going on about the iPad 2 tonight: http://video.teamcoco.com/video/conan.jsp?oid=245467

I have an Apple gift card that I'll have to use this year, but I'm debating whether to buy the iPad2 or the next version of the iPhone. I don't have an iPad, but I'm not 100 percent convinced I need it. Which would you get if you had to choose, the next iPhone or the iPad2?

i should have voted 'other' not qualified. i am devoid of any apple products now, having consigned to my wife the drawer full of iPods and Nanos of yesteryear left behind by my son when he moved to NYC. i'm typing this on my Asus Eee netbook which is charging up my Sony 2g mp3 walkman with pix, video and fm radio. you remember fm radio? i messed around with an iPad 1 when it was released last tuesday, but i have not seen the new iPad 2. i'm not immune to apples though. i have plans to get an iTouch in the near future, a future in which wi-fi is a city wide reality. then i'll tell T-Mobile what it can do with my samsung highlight 'style phone' and 2yr contract.

After reading the reviews on CNET and Yahoo Tech News, I'm kinda on the fence about getting the iPad2. Thinner, faster, and 10 hour battery life.. yeah okay. No SD card slot or USB port??? Drop in price...no. HDMI output with 1080p mirroring...nice. Dual cameras and shoot video in 720p... now we're talking. I think it would be good for frist time buyers, but people who have the first generation should probobly wait for v.3. For me, I would wait for the reviews on the iMovie app. If it allows for a seemless workflow to shoot video, edit and post to social media sites, then I'm there!

johngarcia 180 pts

JasonKatoNishimura Thanks for the comment, Jason! I think I'm in the same boat as you. Lots of niceties, but not sure if it's enough to get a whole new device. If I wasn't so wedded to my iPad 1, it would be a no brainer.

I think if AT&T offers tethering for free in the iPhone4 iOS 4.3 update, I will definitely get an iPad 2. I currently have the unlimited data plan. Time to make use of it!

johngarcia 180 pts

chrisota Hmm, I'd be doubtful. Do you current have an iPad? Wifi or Wifi+3G?

My mother is already eyeing my old iPad. As soon as she saw the news report about the iPad 2, she asked, "So, you going give me your old iPad when you get the new one on March 11?" It was never a rumor, but I was hoping that the iPad 2 would have a built in card reader.

johngarcia 180 pts

edmorita If you have a person to hand your iPad 1 down to, it makes the decision a little easier to stomach. It's just a matter of coming up with the cash for a new iPad.

Not going to lie, though u00e2u0080u0093 when seeing the features video, it took me from on the fence to hell yes! haha I'm slowly climbing back on the fence...

I'm not sold on the iPad, but I'm also not sold on any of the Android tablets released so far either. I think the problem I have is that I will only want a tablet that can replace my laptop. And I use my laptop to run AutoCAD and LIghtroom. Maybe I should start thinking about replacing my phone with a tablet. I think that might be more enticing.

And John, keep the techie topics coming.

johngarcia 180 pts

madmarv Thanks, Marv! Appreciate your feedback. When I got my iPad, that's exactly what I did u00e2u0080u0094 it was a replacement for my phone, really.

Less surfing on my mobile phone, more on the iPad. My phone went back to being just that. A phone.

Great thoughts!

John, you know that I can't say much or have to say much. :) But I can say this: it created a phenomena with other companies and Apple again has increased the competitive bar. LOVE IT! GET IT, MARCH 11.

johngarcia 180 pts

jermel_lynn hehe you working March 11? :p

Ynaku 78 pts

They take trade in? :-) Just spent $500 on a refurb 64 wifi a few months ago. Good enough for now.

808marv 107 pts

Ynaku I know someone at work who bought an iPad only a few weeks ago and they let them return it for credit on iPad 2. Guess they were lucky to purchase it so close to the announcement!

I've been wanting to get an iPad for a while but knew that a newer version would be coming out, so I held off. Now that iPad 2 is here, I'm definitely picking one up. The cameras for FaceTime are a definite plus, but I'm not really sold on using the iPad to take photos and videos. Seems the iPhone is a better form factor for that. When I saw iMovie for iPad, the first thing I thought was, "that would make video editing so much easier." The second thing I thought was "if only they would let you take videos with your iPhone and then transfer them to the iPad to be edited."

Also, I'm always down for tech reviews and such. Keep 'em coming!

johngarcia 180 pts

WERUreo Thanks for the comments! We'll keep the tech reviews coming!

iamwhite 11 pts

Not sold, personally, but then again, I'm biased...Dallas and I got a Motorola Xoom powered by Honeycomb when it came out. I will admit I was relieved to know that the Xoom was still competitive versus the iPad 2 in terms of specs, though! Dallas and I were happy to stay Android :P

johngarcia 180 pts

iamwhite Ah, yes, Ed! Love the Andorid point of view. You need to do a review for us on the Xoom! :) Looking forward to it bro!

johngarcia 180 pts

By the way u00e2u0080u0094 do you folks like seeing this kind of content on Nonstop Honolulu? More tech/product reviews, discussions, new technology, etc.

Let me know! We have some plans underway. :)

JasonKatoNishimura 6 pts

johngarcia Hey John. I'd like to see more tech reviews. In my free time if any, I'm trying to write up some on my blog/website. Keep up the good work!

808marv 107 pts

Feels like the right time for me to get it as a first time iPad user. I held out for the few new features (cameras, smaller size, etc.) and here they are. Really want to plug the guitar in and give Garage Band a try, as well as a whole bunch of other iPad-exclusive apps/games that already work on the first one. Plus hey some of those Angry Birds levels seem to be geared toward the iPad...some of the smaller birds are damn hard to see on the iPhone/iPod Touch! :-P

johngarcia 180 pts

808marv Great comment, Marv! I agree u00e2u0080u0094 if this were my first iPad, it would be a solid purchase.

Either way, when iPad three comes out, it will be a great product for version 1 users to upgrade to and first timers to jump on.

It'll keep getting better over time! Bottom line is, if you want one now, get it now. Mahalo!

johngarcia 180 pts

I'm not 100% sold on the iPad 2 either. I can't justify spending another $700 on a device that only has a few new features.

I'll definately get one but I probably won't be getting one at launch.

What features are you most excited about?

Nanigurl 11 pts

johngarcia I like that it's thinner/lighter. The cameras are a plus too. But, like you, I'm not sure if that justifies upgrading. Plus I love my Speck hardshell on my old iPad. :)

valdezign 20 pts

On the fence. Most compelling feature is the cameras. I just think it'd be awesome to hold an iPad to take photos/videos (biggest screen on a camera, ever?) then edit on the same device. FaceTime will be awesome, too. I have my iPad propped up next to my desk, anyway. It'd be perfect to have quick video conferences.

johngarcia 180 pts

valdezign I think the camera will be most key for Facetime and video conference uses. As iPad is already evolved into everyday business functions and for meetings, it would be a great natural extention with it's camera integration.

Do you already own an iPad, Val?

valdezign 20 pts

johngarcia It's technically university property, but yes. :)

If I do get the iPad2, it would be for my daughter and my wife. They fight over the iPad1, constantly!

chrisota 19 pts

valdezign I hope they make some type of privacy screen setting. You don't want everyone in back of you staring at what you are taking photos of lol.

chrisota 19 pts

Still on the fence about the iPad. I haven't seen a huge reason to use up to this point and have been fine without it. The camera will be a big benefit when I'm coaching my swimmers to record and display feedback quickly and much larger than the iPhone. I still see it as a luxury to own.

johngarcia 180 pts

chrisota "I still see it as a luxury to own" well said, Chris! iPads are still "nice to have" toys but I know of many people who have bought one because they don't do much computer use but have old computers that they can no longer rely on.

Surfing the web, reading, casual gaming or keeping the kids busy. :)

Do you have an iPad already?

chrisota 19 pts

johngarcia I'd love to have it as a reading material before I sleep as well. Unfortunately I don't own one... yet :]
