Favorite rainy-day pastimes

Rainy-days are creative days for me. What are some of your favorite rainy-day memories and pastimes and what do you love, or hate about being rained in?

If you’re in or around the Hawaiian Islands today, you’re aware that we’re in the midst of bad weather. Last night, the National Weather Service reported heavy rainfall and thunderstorms would be hitting the island, which brought me to thinking about those great stormy-weather moments and some of my favorite rainy-day pastimes.

For me, probably like most of you, I enjoy turning on the A/C (yes, I like it arctic), popping in the latest unopened Blu-ray movie and cuddling up to high-definition, Dolby 5.1 surround sound action.

I also find it the best time to launch Photoshop and do design work without the distraction of sunny skies outside. There’s something about the rain that brings out the creative in me. My mind feels fresh, the drizzling sound is calming and the air is nice and cool.

As a kid, I remember rainy days as a chance to run outside and play in the puddles. Flash flood warnings were welcomed and riding our bikes home from school gave us a reason get dirty, almost as if no one was watching. Of course, I’d always get yelled at by Mom for coming home soaked and tracking mud in to the house.

Which brings me to my question; what are some of your rainy-day memories and pastimes? What do you love, or hate about being rained in?

For you creatives out there, do you design better when the rain is falling and what type of weather are you most creative? Post up your thoughts and stay dry out there!

And with that, I’ll leave you with 13 fabulous photos of a rainy day from Digital-Photography-School.com:

Rainy days don't seem to matter. Yesterday it was 40 degrees, raining, and otherwise miserable outside. So a friend of mine from Haiti and I played golf. OK, sounds odd but here are the details. First, toss a four sided cover over the golf cart, next, fire up two 3,000 BTU cup holder Coleman golf cart heaters, put on light weight rain gear over Under Armor Cold Gear, and off to the races you go. The challenge is to break 100 if you normally shoot in the 80's and 90 if you normally shoot in the 70s. If this is not the order of the day there are three alternatives. First there is full court basketball. This has been a first choice all of my life. Great exercise and a truly fun sport. You get to talk story and give stink eye for a few hours and then go home and crash. Second, reading or writing. Currently working on my first non-fiction novel, first novel period, and it is fun to do late at night and like John said the creative juices flow when the weather outside stinks. Must be a genetic thing to keep us from going stir crazy indoors. And reading good books never gets old. Lastly, computer and console gaming never gets old. Never. Between the Wii and the XBOX my son and I can kill a rainy day in no time. But as mentioned earlier, rain never stops the crazy people, like me, from finding a way to entertain ourselves outdoors. Never has and never will.

I love the sound of rain. There is something about it tat just lulls me to sleep. I don't feel particularly creative when it rains. Instead I use the rain as a means of inflection. I like to watch the rain and just sit with my thoughts in meditation.

I think rain makes me emo and brings out my creative dark side :) Unfortunately today's rainy day was spent Christmas shopping so no emo-ness for me :) But I remember in college, when I lived in a dorm, we loved it when it when we'd get warm rain. Then my roommates and I would run out onto the basketball court and dance in the rain :)

Another vote for sleeping and or watching/listening the rain. The roofs are kinda noisy where I am so when it rains so it's a little hard to be creative for me. Like I try to play some guitar or ukulele and if it's a heavy rain all you hear is CLACK CLACK CLACK from the roof. Better to just sit out on the porch in a comfotable chair or go to bed and take a nap LOL.

As a child some memories of being rained in were playing board/card games with the siblings, or watching daytime tv. No, not Young and The Restless or Oprah/The View kine daytime tv, but real old school when there were a lot of game shows on like Password, Card Sharks, and of course The Price Is Right, and syndicated reruns on like Hogan's Heroes or Sanford and Son. Not a big deal now with cable TV/internet/DVRs, but these memories are also pre-VCR so it was a treat to watch these shows if you could stay home whether it was because of rain closing down school or being sick.

JMattHicks Ah sleeping! How could I forget that? Ah great memories of your papa. Amazing things happen in the rain, the way the drops fall, how puddles splash, how potholes grow... lol Thanks for sharing!

LOVE the photo gallery, was a thoughtful, if somewhat melancholy exhibit ... and i didn't even have to leave the house! rainy days make me glum. i worry abt having hot water (solar here and showering in HOT water is my fave thing to do on cold days) and my fingers get numb, which distracts from writing. i actually wear gloves w/ fingers cut off on days like this. brrr. must go ck the water.

nonstopmari Good one! I love a hot shower on a cold day as well... just hate getting out! :) I have solar as well and can tell when it's either cloudy outside or it's been raining.

Never thought about the writing/numb finger part of things... what weather do you prefer the most for creativity?
