Closing: Zanzabar (1 of 19)
After almost 14 years, the legendary Waikiki nightclub at the Waikiki Trade Center on Kuhio Avenue has decided to shut its doors, effective after September 1. One of the longest-running nightclubs in Honolulu, Zanzabar, with its Egyptian-themed décor and 4 a.m. closing time, was known worldwide as a hot spot, hosting promotions like Pro Bowl parties, Rick Rock's Thirsty Thursdays, a weekly that lasted for 12 years, salsa dance nights and crowded weekend dance parties. The owners of the club cited a combination of smaller crowds, the need for major renovations and the inability to procure a new long-term lease to justify the renovations as the reasons why they have called it quits after so long.
After The Shack Waikiki closed last year, Zanzabar was the last nightlife spot to inhabit the Waikiki Trade Center. It is unknown what will happen to the venue.
