Are you ready for Nonstop’s third all-natto dinner? The stinky bean returns on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, with an all-new menu of natto creations by Grant Kawasaki of OC16′s Hawaiian Grown TV, a natto devotee who pounded the table when I brought up this dinner. “I. Love. Natto,” he growled, then leaned in and unleashed a whole litany of his own incredible natto creations, none of which I can remember except for the words ice cream.
I don’t know if ice cream is making a third appearance after the Jack Daniels-corn flakes-garlic chips version from our second natto dinner at Tokkuri-Tei last year, or the natto-saltines version from our first dinner at Naru the year before. But I do know that the first time I tried Kawasaki’s food, he blew me away with what was supposed to be a lamb loco moco but somehow, after his mind got done playing, ended up as a crisp, juicy lamb patty seared to just-pink inside, atop a local succotash of fresh corn, Hamakua mushrooms and currant tomatoes in a mint-raisin-pinot noir demi-glace. It was the kind of dish you don’t want to stop eating. And I’m definitely looking forward to the natto cheesecake.
Kawasaki, who helped develop the original menu at Dash Gastropub, is still concocting more natto recipes, though so far I only know the three tantalizing glimpses he’s named above. But I can promise you this: What you’ll see at NATTO AGAIN! The un-Valentine dinner will be a mix of familiar dishes natto lovers can pound, and completely unexpected, wild and crazy new creations.
So do you love slime? Do you love stink? And can you handle the scorn of the self-respecting world? Who’s in? Just reply in the comments, and I’ll see you Feb. 14.
