This past Monday, June 4, was the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway at Midway Atoll, one of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. I had the privilege of attending the ceremony and exploring the isolated island for the day. Here is a selection of my favorite shots from Midway, but if you’re interested in the full story, please check out my blog here.
Scenes from Midway Atoll (1 of 24)
The plane that took our group to Midway was a C-40, which is a military-modified 737. We left Oahu from Hickam around 2:00am HST, and arrived at Midway's Sand Island an hour or so before sunrise to avoid hitting any birds while landing. Most flights in and out of Midway occur in hours of darkness, with the ground crew checking the runway for birds before the planes use it.

great shots. i can certainly relate to the first. i've been on Midway twice, both times at night with no moon. couldn't see anything but standing next to the plane wheels i could hear the surf breaking out on the reef.
