My friends and I just got back from a week of outdoor adventures on the Big Island, which definitely lived up to its name in size and things to do. From attractions in Hilo, to exploring nature and history throughout Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and even an up-close-and-personal encounter with an active lava flow, we had a great time visiting Hawaii’s youngest island. Here’s a look at of our adventures, with links to more information below.
Kalapana Lava Fields (2 of 20)
Though there is a free lava viewing area in Kalapana, it is a few miles away from the current active flow, so at night only an orange glow is visible on the mountainside. We wanted to get an even closer look, so we hired Kalapana Cultural Tours to take us on our lava adventure!

The technique and artistry in this set is insane! I'd like to pre-order your 2012 Year-in-review coffee table photo book ; )
